Velaa Private Island sits well north of Malé in Noonu Atoll. The journey ends on an island occupied by a single resort....
A Maldives stay begins with the island, not simply a beach or water villa. The collection spans the Malé atolls, Baa and Raa, Noonu, Shaviyani and Laamu, with very different reasons to settle in each. Decide whether the trip should revolve around a sandy garden setting, contemporary art and dining, marine discovery or a dedicated wellbeing retreat; then match the resort and its arrival route to that choice.

| Area or Stay | Why Consider It | Before You Book |
|---|---|---|
| Soneva FushiSoneva Fushi | Beach villas sit within a forested island setting, alongside an overwater collection. | A natural starting point for families or friends who want space on land and a sense of a wooded island, rather than choosing by a water-villa photograph alone. |
| Patina Maldives, Fari IslandsPatina Maldives Fari Islands | Marcio Kogan-designed villas and studios sit within a resort whose Fari Marina Village brings restaurants, boutiques and James Turrell’s Amarta Skyspace. | Choose this for contemporary design and a social island setting with places to explore beyond the villa. |
| Gili Lankanfushi MaldivesGili Lankanfushi Maldives | The Island View Crusoe Residence stands away from shore, with a private motorized boat or resort pontoon for crossings. | The separation shapes daily life: returning to the island for dining or activities involves a boat journey. Choose it for that retreat experience and discuss the crossings for your party. |
One&Only Reethi Rah has beach and water villas as well as residences, with palm-shaded cycling paths and twelve beaches around the island. It suits travelers who want their days to include movement around the resort, not only time on a single villa deck. Begin with a beach villa when walking straight onto the sand is central to the stay.
Cheval Blanc Randheli brings a different aesthetic to the island holiday: substantial villa interiors, curated art and a Guerlain spa on its own island. The Horizon Villa has an overwater living room and deck with a private infinity pool. Consider Randheli when the accommodation, design and spa should be major parts of the trip, with Noonu as the setting rather than a checklist of excursions.
Six Senses Laamu makes marine learning part of a stay through SHELL, its research and education center, and the Maldives Underwater Initiative. Coral, seagrass and turtle work give snorkeling and time with the marine team a context beyond the view from a villa. This is a useful choice for travelers interested in how an island ecosystem works; arrange the activities that interest you rather than treating conservation as a general hotel label.
A two-resort stay can have a clearer purpose than a change of beach. JOALI Maldives on Muravandhoo brings interactive art and installations into island life, while JOALI BEING on Bodufushi centers its wellbeing approach on Mind, Skin, Microbiome and Energy. Pair them for creative exploration followed by a more focused wellbeing chapter. Both are in Raa Atoll; arrange the actual transfer between the resorts before fixing the sequence.
JW Marriott Maldives Resort & Spa is on Vagaru in Shaviyani Atoll and uses a seaplane connection, while JW Marriott Maldives Kaafu Atoll Island Resort is on Hathaa Finolhu in Kaafu Atoll and uses speedboat transfers. Choose between these settings with the onward journey in mind: a flight is part of the Shaviyani stay, while Kaafu continues from Velana by boat. Compare the complete arrival and departure arrangements alongside the resort experience you want.
For a family or multigenerational Maldives stay, compare the villa plan as well as the island. Conrad Maldives Rangali Island has multi-bedroom accommodation in both beach and overwater settings. Decide whether you need separate sleeping spaces with a place to spend time together, then check the bedrooms, shared areas and outdoor access in the accommodation you intend to reserve. Match access to the sand or lagoon to your party, and establish which villas can accommodate everyone traveling.
Once the resort character is clear, compare the Maldives hotel offers for the accommodation and journey you have chosen.
January to March is the northeast monsoon’s dry-season period; the wetter southwest monsoon normally runs from mid-May to November. December and April are transition months. For a trip centered on sunshine and time outdoors, begin with the dry-season window, while allowing for weather on the particular island. Rainfall varies across the country and generally increases from north to south; a season is a planning guide, not a promise of clear skies.
Seaplanes operate in daylight, so an evening arrival can change the first night of the journey. Establish the international-flight connection before choosing the resort. Some islands have another route: Soneva Fushi can also be reached by domestic flight to Dharavandhoo followed by speedboat. Others may require an overnight near Malé before the onward flight. Confirm the connection for your chosen island rather than assuming every resort has an evening alternative.
Not always. Malé uses UTC+5, while some resorts work an hour ahead. JW Marriott Maldives Resort & Spa uses its own island time, and JOALI Maldives also operates at GMT+6. Check which clock applies to dining, activities and the transfer instructions you receive; keep the international flight time distinct from the resort’s daily schedule.
Pack modest clothing for inhabited local islands, even when the resort part of the holiday is spent in swimwear. Local-island communities and private resort islands are different settings. Where a local island has a designated bikini beach, use that area for swimwear and dress modestly again when returning to the settlement. A light cover-up makes a village visit easier to include in the day.
Baa Atoll is a UNESCO biosphere reserve, with a marine environment of coral reefs, lagoons and deep channels. Choose it when that island-and-ocean setting is an important reason for the trip. The designation applies to the wider reserve; choose the resort’s own reef access and marine excursions separately to match what you hope to experience in the water.
