Luxury Hotels In Shanghai

Shanghai makes a strong case for choosing the hotel character before the room: a restored Bund landmark, a tower above Lujiazui, a quiet design hotel in Jing'an, or a villa with its own living space. The river is part of that choice, but the city extends well beyond its postcard skyline. Match the base to the outings you want to make and the kind of accommodation you want to return to.

Three Distinct Shanghai Hotel Characters

Area or StayWhy Consider ItBefore You Book
Waldorf Astoria On The Bund: A Historic LandmarkWaldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund The restored heritage building was constructed in 1911 and once housed the Shanghai Club. Choose this character when the historic building is part of the experience you want from a city hotel.
The Ritz-Carlton, Pudong: A Lujiazui Tower StayThe Ritz Carlton Shanghai Pudong The hotel occupies the upper part of the 58-floor Shanghai IFC tower in Lujiazui, with Art Deco design. Consider Lujiazui when your plans belong on the Pudong side of the river.
The PuLi: A Quiet Design Contrast In Jing'anThe PuLi Hotel and Spa Shanghai A calm, minimal design hotel at 1 Chang De Road in Jing'an. Consider it when you want a city base whose interior atmosphere offers a quieter contrast to Shanghai's towers and heritage landmarks.

Separate Qiantan's New Bund From The Historic Bund

Waldorf Astoria Shanghai Qiantan sits on the southern stretch of the New Bund in Pudong, on the opposite bank of the Huangpu from Waldorf Astoria Shanghai on the Bund. Qiantan gives direct access to Qiantan Park and the waterfront promenade of Qiantan Youcheng Park. Choose that river-and-park setting deliberately; the shared Waldorf Astoria and Bund names do not identify the same neighborhood.

Choose A Shikumen Villa In Xuhui

Capella Shanghai Jian Ye Li is at 480 West Jianguo Road in Xuhui. Its Three Bedroom Shikumen Grand Villa has separate living, dining and television spaces, creating a different format from a tower room. The accommodation is arranged across three stories, accessible only by stairs. For a group that wants to gather privately, compare that shared space with the practical needs of everyone using the bedrooms.

Plan An Apartment Stay In Jing'an

At Upper House Shanghai, Apartment 55 has a fully equipped private kitchen and living space. This named category is a useful choice when preparing food and spending time in your own living area matter to the stay. The hotel is at 366 Shi Men Yi Road in Jing'an. Select the accommodation for those features, rather than treating room size alone as a substitute for a kitchen.

Make The Quarry Hotel A Separate Kind Of Shanghai Stay

InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland is in Songjiang's Sheshan Tourism Resort, built against the cliff face of an abandoned quarry. The lobby echoes quarry rock layers, while Mr. Fisher restaurant sits beneath the water surface. Choose this architectural setting when the building and dining environment are part of what you want to experience in Shanghai.

For the broader journey, use the China hotel guide. Once the Shanghai accommodation is chosen, explore the Shanghai hotel offers for its separate booking comparisons.

Questions About Shanghai

When Is The Best Season For Walking And Sightseeing In Shanghai?

Spring and autumn are useful starting points for a stay with substantial time outdoors. Spring warms gradually but brings drizzle and changing temperatures; autumn becomes cooler. Summer is hot and humid, with thunderstorms and the annual plum-rain period typically around mid-June to early July. Winter can be cold and damp. Choose the season around your outdoor plans, and keep indoor visits in the itinerary without treating the seasonal pattern as a weather guarantee.

Does The Airport Link Take Me Directly To A Central Shanghai Hotel?

The Airport Link connects Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 with Pudong Airport Terminals 1 and 2, with intermediate stations. It is an airport-to-airport rail route, not a hotel service. Hongqiao Airport Terminal 2 is served by Metro lines 2 and 10; Metro Line 17 serves Hongqiao Railway Station. Pudong Airport connects with Metro Line 2 and the Maglev. Zhongchun Road also provides a connection to Metro Line 9. Choose the onward route for your actual hotel address and arrival terminal before deciding that the Airport Link completes the journey.

Which Shanghai Museum Site Should I Plan To Visit?

Distinguish the museum on People's Square at 201 Ren Min Da Dao in Huangpu from Shanghai Museum East at 1952 Century Avenue in Pudong. Choose the site for the galleries or exhibition you want, then fit that visit into the appropriate part of the city. The East site closes on Tuesdays except national holidays. Individual visitors currently do not need a general reservation there, but the Curio-City and Digital Gallery require advance reservations, and ticketed special exhibitions have separate arrangements.

Should I Take A Huangpu Ferry Or A Sightseeing Cruise?

Use a ferry when the purpose is to cross between Puxi and Pudong. A sightseeing cruise is a different outing: the Huangpu cruise from Shiliupu Piers 1 and 2 heads toward Yangpu Bridge and returns, passing the historic Bund and the Lujiazui skyline. Choose the crossing for getting to the other bank, or the cruise for time viewing both riverfronts from the water. Match the actual departure pier and current service to that purpose.

Are Shanghai Railway Station And Shanghai Hongqiao Station Interchangeable?

No. Shanghai Railway Station is on Moling Road in Jing'an, connected with Metro lines 1, 3 and 4. Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station is on Shengui Road in Minhang, connected with lines 2, 10 and 17. Use the exact station on your train reservation when planning the hotel journey. The city name alone does not identify which arrival point belongs in the itinerary, particularly if your hotel is on a different side of the city.
