The PuLi Hotel and Spa Shanghai

The PuLi Shanghai is a hotel beside JingAn Park in central Shanghai, with an urban resort character shaped by greenery and restrained interiors. At 1 ChangDe Road, it is also close to JingAn Temple. The address puts a park, a major shopping district and useful metro connections into the same small area.

Inside, polished tile floors and silk wall coverings give the public spaces a tactile richness. Contemporary furniture sits alongside reproductions of Chinese household objects, placing familiar domestic forms in a modern setting. The library has an open fireplace, a more intimate place to sit than the main lobby. With 193 rooms and 36 suites, the property has the scale of a full city hotel, though its interiors favor a residential mood.

Layan's original design used carved timber screens and textured gray brick to establish a connection with local materials and craft. Dark wood was balanced by pale sandstone, while the fireplace cladding drew on traditional bronze mirrors. These references shaped a distinctly Chinese identity without making the hotel a period reconstruction. The Long Bar was conceived as a central meeting place, with large sliding panels opening up the guest rooms elsewhere in the building.

Deluxe Rooms measure 45 square meters with city views; Grand Rooms add a park outlook at 47 square meters. The 52-square-meter Grand Studio occupies a corner, facing both park and skyline. Sliding screens separate bedrooms and bathrooms in these studio layouts. The Junior Suite is about 50 square meters, with an open-plan living area and city views.

For a separate lounge, consider a Deluxe Suite, which also has a pantry and guest washroom. Grand Suites span 95 square meters. The 130-square-meter Jing'An Suite has two bedrooms with individual walk-in closets, a shared living room and a dining table. Both larger suites face the park and sit on upper guest-room floors. Choose by layout and outlook as well as floor area. A separate living room lets one person read or work while another uses the bedroom.

PHÉNIX brings French brasserie cooking to the second floor, looking over JingAn Park. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served here, so the room can be part of a morning routine as readily as an evening reservation. Seasonal ingredients and classical French techniques give the restaurant its focus.

Dinner can follow a four- or six-course set menu, or you can order individual dishes. French onion soup with sourdough and Gruyère sits alongside seafood and grilled meats. The set menu pairs halibut with bouillabaisse flavors and chicken with Albufera sauce, root vegetables and black truffle. Aged Comté comes with baguette and honey; lemon tart and chocolate fondant are among the dessert choices. Dishes change, but the menu format leaves room for either a planned sequence or a shorter meal.

Downstairs, the Long Bar serves breakfast, afternoon tea and meals into the late evening. Its all-day menu extends well beyond drinks and snacks. The Garden Terrace shares the first-floor setting, with bamboo, tall park trees and water around the seating. It is a pleasant place for tea or an outdoor meal when the weather allows.

At the Long Bar, the Asian section is worth reading before settling on a sandwich. Drunken chicken uses aged Huadiao wine, and scallion noodles come with dried scallops. Hainanese chicken rice arrives with chicken soup and separate condiments, including ginger and spring onion. Western choices include salads, pasta and a croque madame; hummus with vegetables and crisp polenta makes a lighter order.

The Wellness Centre includes a 25-meter indoor infinity pool with views toward JingAn Park. The heated pool has broad windows along one side. Slate and teal mosaic tiles line the water, with broad daybeds alongside it. The pool's posted hours run from early morning into the evening, allowing a swim before breakfast or after returning from the city.

On the same third floor, the gym has cardio and resistance machines as well as free weights. Floor-to-ceiling windows face the park. A hot tub, sauna and steam room complete the facilities, alongside The PuLi Spa.

The treatment menu includes 60- or 90-minute signature, aromatic and deep-tissue massages. A personalized facial takes an hour, while Valmont and Swissline treatments give the facial menu more depth. Discuss the treatment style with the spa team when reserving, particularly if you prefer lighter pressure or have a specific concern. Arrive 15 minutes early to complete the consultation without using treatment time. Cancellations require at least four hours' notice to avoid the full treatment charge. The spa regards its setting as unsuitable for babies and small children, and its published policy excludes massage during pregnancy and nursing.

JingAn Park deserves time at ground level as well as from a room window. Its camphor trees form a shaded canopy, and a sunken square sits beside the main entrance. The temple and its surrounding commercial area give a short walk several distinct stopping points. Farther along West Nanjing Road, shopping addresses include JingAn Kerry Centre, Plaza 66 and HKRI Taikoo Hui. Historic Zhangyuan adds another layer to the district, beyond the malls and office towers. You can build a day around this part of Shanghai without treating every outing as a journey across town.

The hotel's Curation program adds guided ways into the city. Shanghai's Secrets is a walking route that takes in lane houses, the Children's Palace and the Paramount Ballroom, tracing different periods of Shanghai's architecture and social life. Creative Talks turn the focus to the present, with artists and fashion figures sharing their work in 45-minute salon sessions. Ask which walks and talks coincide with your dates; the program is arranged by inquiry.

For longer journeys, JingAn Temple station serves Metro Lines 2, 7 and 14. Line 2 connects with both Hongqiao and Pudong airports, and the station provides access to the Reel department store beside the hotel. Hongqiao is roughly 14 kilometers away, while Pudong is about 50 kilometers away. Road travel depends on traffic, so leave room in the departure plan rather than relying on a fixed transfer time.
