Phuket is Thailand's largest island, in the Andaman Sea off the country's southwest coast. The west coast holds the famous beaches — Patong, Kata, Karon, Surin, and the quieter, resort-lined bays of Layan, Bang Tao, and Pansea. The island is also the gateway to Phang Nga Bay's limestone karsts and the Phi Phi archipelago.

The northwest coast — Pansea, Bang Tao, Layan, and Mai Khao — holds the highest concentration of 5-star resorts and the calmest beaches. Patong remains the nightlife and shopping hub but is far busier. The northern bays (Emerald Bay, Naka Yai) offer the most seclusion.
November to April is the dry, high season — the best window for beaches and diving. May to October is the southwest monsoon; afternoon showers are typical and seas on the west coast can be rough. Peak prices fall over Christmas and Chinese New Year.
Phuket International Airport sits on the north end of the island, closest to Mai Khao (10–15 minutes) and the Bang Tao/Laguna area (30 minutes). Patong, Kata, and Karon are 45–60 minutes south. Private transfers are standard for 5-star hotels.
