The architecture draws on the ancient village of Tulor, south of San Pedro. A quieter walk can be as absorbing as a long drive when you have time to notice the surroundings.

San Pedro and its surroundings are tied to Atacameno culture, old trade routes, desert agriculture and a long history of settlement. The region is not an empty wilderness. The Ayllus, traditional local communities, bring irrigation channels and cultivated land into the picture. Visiting them helps explain how an oasis supports everyday life in such dry surroundings.
