The buildings retain their historic character, while furniture by designers including Charles and Ray Eames, Eileen Gray and Le Corbusier brings a different period into focus. Late Baroque wood paneling survives in the Historic Suites; elsewhere, contemporary interiors give the accommodation a lighter expression. The result is far removed from a row of identical bedrooms.

Art forms part of the hotel rather than a separate attraction. Robert Rauschenberg created a work specifically for the Penthouse Suite, and the collection includes works by Giacometti. In warmer months, the Widder Garden opens in the inner courtyard. It gives guests an outdoor alternative to the restaurants and the street-facing tables on Rennweg.

The accommodation comprises 32 rooms and 17 suites. A Design Queen Room measures 21 to 27 square meters, a compact option for a short visit with most of the day spent out. Design Queen Superior rooms increase that range to 27 to 37 square meters. Design King Deluxe rooms span 32 to 50 square meters, so it is worth checking the specific room size when extra space is important.

Historic Junior Suites range from 34 to 59 square meters. The Duplex Junior Suite has a two-level layout, measures 55 to 65 square meters and accommodates up to three people. Travelers who prefer everything on one level should discuss the layout before reserving a duplex. At this hotel, a category name alone does not tell you everything about the room.

For a separate living area, the Widder Historic Suite offers 48 to 65 square meters with distinct sleeping and sitting spaces. Original wood paneling is part of its character. Bathroom fittings differ between suites, with a walk-in shower, spa shower or bathtub depending on the room. Request a bathtub specifically if that is a priority. Widder Design Suites are larger, at 73 to 85 square meters, with both a bathtub and shower.

The 53-square-meter Widder Family Suite accommodates four guests. A master bedroom with a double bed connects to an area with two single beds, and the bathroom has a large walk-in shower. This is useful for a family who wants to stay together without relying on an extra bed. Ask about the exact separation between the sleeping areas if different bedtimes will shape your stay.

The hotel's residences across the street provide fully equipped kitchens, with concierge and housekeeping support from Widder. They merit consideration for a longer assignment in Zurich or a family visit involving meals at home. The Monocle Townhouse is another option, with more than 250 square meters, a dining room, kitchen and terrace. It extends over two floors connected by a staircase, with no lift. Confirm the sleeping arrangement and stair access before choosing it for your group.

The Penthouse Suite occupies the top of the historic Augustinerhaus. Its 84-square-meter interior opens to an 80-square-meter rooftop terrace with views over the city toward Lake Zurich. A separate bedroom overlooks the Old Town rooftops, while the living room includes a fireplace, dining table and bar. There is also a whirlpool bathtub, shower and guest toilet. The terrace is the clearest reason to choose this suite over another large category, particularly when outdoor time matters as much as interior space.

Widder Restaurant holds two Michelin stars and is led by Stefan Heilemann. The dining rooms extend through Kleinen Widder and Haus zum Bauknecht, where a preserved medieval ceiling gives dinner an architectural setting of its own. Heilemann's French-influenced cooking draws on international flavors and close relationships with producers. Make the restaurant reservation alongside your room arrangements when dinner here is a principal reason for the trip.

Boucherie AuGust takes a more informal approach, with Swiss regional cooking centered on meat and sausage specialties. Pâtés, terrines and tartars sit alongside traditional dishes. Large windows face Rennweg, and tables move onto the street-side terrace in warmer months. It is an appealing alternative when you want a local meal without making the evening a fine-dining occasion.

At Augustinergasse 28, Soï 28 brings Heilemann's interest in Asian street food into a separate restaurant. Head chef Miguel Marques leads the daily kitchen. Dishes include fried rice, pork belly buns, Thai beef salad and ramen. The contrast with Widder Restaurant is useful during a longer stay: the two addresses share a culinary connection while serving quite different kinds of meal.

Ancient wooden beams, red leather seating and a lapis lazuli wall give Widder Bar a recognizable interior. Its selection includes more than 650 whiskies and 1,200 spirits, alongside cocktails. Live piano continues the bar's musical tradition, which also includes a history of jazz performances. Reservations are not accepted, so a room booking should not be taken as a reserved seat at the bar.

Widder's fitness room is in the basement and opens around the clock. For spa time, the concierge arranges visits to Alex Lake Zürich in Thalwil, a separate lakeside hotel. Allow for the journey when planning treatments; this is not a spa within the Rennweg property. Massages can also be arranged at your booked hotel through the concierge. The address is Rennweg 7, about 650 meters from Zurich Hauptbahnhof. The walking route follows Bahnhofstrasse before turning into Rennweg; a tram to the Rennweg stop is another option. Regular airport trains reach the main station in under 15 minutes, with onward travel to the hotel additional. Car transfers can be arranged separately.

The hotel stands in a pedestrian zone, but vehicle access is permitted for hotel guests. A concierge-issued permit is required at certain times, and the hotel has a garage. Request arrival instructions before driving in, since navigation systems may mark the route as inaccessible. Once settled, the railway connection and central address make Widder practical for combining a Zurich stay with onward travel through Switzerland.
