Johannes Baur founded the hotel as a lakeside retreat, and the founding family now runs it in its seventh generation. That continuity remains relevant to a stay. Grand-hotel traditions shape its public rooms, while the bedrooms pair period references with contemporary furniture. The result feels appropriate to a house that has hosted visitors since the 19th century, without requiring every space to follow one decorative style.

The private park separates the hotel from the surrounding streets. Heritage-protected trees shape the gardens, where there is room for a short stroll or an unhurried pause before dinner. Contemporary art is also part of the grounds' life: the annual Art in the Park exhibition has been held since 2007. Its changing selection is a reason to check what is on during your visit, rather than expect the same sculptures on every return.

The hotel has 119 rooms and suites, including 27 Junior Suites and 18 Suites. Styles draw on Art Deco, Louis XVI and English Regency, alongside more contemporary touches. This variety is part of the appeal, but it also means the right category should be chosen with care. A view of the inner courtyard is quite different from a room looking over the park and lake.

Single Rooms are approximately 25 square meters, with a queen-size bed, a workspace and city or courtyard views. They make sense for a solo traveler who will spend much of the day out. Double Rooms provide about 35 square meters and a choice of king or twin beds. Their outlook can take in the city, courtyard or Schanzengraben, so ask about the position if the canal view matters to you.

Junior Suites add a large sitting area and sofa within a combined living and sleeping space. At around 50 square meters, they look toward the courtyard or canal. The Lakeside Junior Suite increases that to approximately 60 square meters, with views across the park and Lake Zurich. The sitting area leaves room to read or work in the same open layout, while the extra floor space makes a longer stay easier.

The full suites give greater separation. A City Suite has roughly 60 square meters and a separate living area, while the 65-square-meter River Suite faces the Schanzengraben. Designer Frédéric d'Haufayt created the River Suites, pairing handcrafted furnishings with monochrome bathrooms. Lakeside Suites offer about 70 square meters overlooking the park and lake. At approximately 90 square meters, the Lakeside Corner Suite adds a broader outlook across the park, lake and canal, plus a guest toilet.

Some rooms and suites have balconies, but they are not standard throughout the hotel. Families can request connecting accommodation, including an adjoining Double Room with certain Junior Suites or River Suites. Larger combinations are possible in selected categories, subject to availability. Cribs are available on request for infants up to three years old.

Marguita brings Mediterranean cooking to the edge of the park and lake. Lunch and dinner can be built around plates for the table or individual dishes, and the terrace adds an outdoor option when conditions allow. The atmosphere makes it easy to give lunch as much attention as dinner, particularly on a day when the lake and gardens are your main plans.

Baur's Bar gives an evening a more urban tone. Its cocktail selection includes the Edigroni and Baur's G&T, alongside wines and digestifs. A drink here need not become a full restaurant occasion, which is useful after a concert or dinner elsewhere in Zurich. Between the bar and Marguita's Mediterranean approach, there are distinct reasons to return to the hotel in the evening.

Le Hall is the historic lobby bar and one of the most useful spaces in the hotel. It works for coffee, lunch, an aperitif or a quiet pause between appointments. Desserts from the hotel's own patisserie give a short stop its own appeal. Afternoon tea follows a British tradition, with Länggass teas, finger sandwiches, scones, jam and clotted cream. It is a different occasion from a restaurant meal, suited to an afternoon you are happy to leave largely unplanned.

Baur au Lac Vins adds another dimension for wine-minded travelers. The wine business dates to 1844, and a boutique inside the hotel sells wines and spirits. A visit allows more time for browsing than choosing a bottle over dinner, and can be worthwhile when looking for something to take home.

The fitness area has views toward Lake Zurich and the Alps. Its equipment supports both strength and endurance work: Technogym machines, Woodway treadmills, a rowing ergometer and free weights provide several ways to train. Personal sessions can be booked separately, and the TRAVEL FIT program offers an in-room alternative.

The location is one of the main reasons to book. Baur au Lac sits at Talstrasse 1, close to the edge of Lake Zurich and a short walk from Bahnhofstrasse. The Old Town and Limmat walks offer a different outing from the shopping streets, while the nearby Tonhalle is convenient for a concert. A day can combine work near Paradeplatz with time by the water without requiring a move to another part of Zurich.

The hotel arranges transfers from Zurich Airport and the main railway station through its concierge. A Mercedes V-Class minivan is available for families or groups alongside sedan options; discuss luggage and party size when arranging the journey. Twice-daily housekeeping, a 24-hour concierge and round-the-clock room service support stays with early departures or late returns. They are practical reasons to use Baur au Lac before or after a longer Swiss itinerary, keeping the Zurich portion easy to organize without giving up the pleasure of a grand hotel.
