The preserved residence gives Shisui an architectural identity that would be difficult to recreate in a new hotel. Its Taisho-era rooms were adapted for public spaces, so the history is encountered during a meal or on the way through the property rather than confined to a display. The hotel's newer guest accommodation sits alongside that older fabric, keeping the original building legible while making room for modern facilities.

One room in the former residence has particular historical significance. In 1951, Emperor Showa signed the instruments of ratification for the San Francisco Peace Treaty and the Japan-US Security Treaty here. The room retains much of its original furniture and fittings. That specific episode lends the house a civic history distinct from the temple heritage surrounding it.

Yoshikien Garden lies adjacent to the hotel, not within every room's view. Created on the site of a former Kofuku-ji sub-temple, it is arranged as a pond garden, moss garden and tea-flower garden, with a detached tea room. Guests interested in the hotel's setting can appreciate those different garden traditions nearby; the rooms and restaurants offer their own garden-facing perspectives, depending on location.

Shisui's 43 rooms and suites occupy the first and second floors and range from 40 to 98 square metres according to the hotel. The categories start with Standard and Superior rooms, then extend through Deluxe rooms, Junior Suites, Suites and a Presidential Suite. Nara craftwork informs the interiors, while large windows in some categories bring the greenery into view. The emphasis is on a clear relationship between the room and its setting, rather than on a uniform historical style.

Hot-spring access is an important distinction when choosing a room. The hotel says that 23 of its 43 rooms have a natural hot-spring bath, either indoors or open to the air. Standard and Superior rooms are not listed as hot-spring categories; the applicable Deluxe and suite categories identify the bath in their names. A guest choosing specifically for an in-room onsen should select one of those named categories, rather than assume that every room includes one.

Room sizes and configurations also differ. The Standard category measures 40 to 41 square metres and has either twin or king bedding; Superior rooms measure 43 to 46 square metres. A Junior Suite with an indoor hot-spring bath is listed at 53 to 61 square metres. These differences make the category names useful practical information, especially for guests balancing extra living space against a private bathing experience.

Restaurant Suiyou occupies a former reception room of the Governor's Residence. Garden views and details retained from the Taisho-period building give the dining room a direct connection to the property's past. It is the hotel's principal restaurant, serving breakfast as well as lunch and dinner, so the historic room can be experienced at different points in the day.

The kitchen draws on Nara's culinary culture and the influences that reached the city along the Silk Road. That idea is expressed through contemporary Japanese cooking rather than a static recreation of old recipes. A meal here is most interesting for the pairing of the former reception room with the ingredients and techniques on the plate. The restaurant also has a private dining room, Shitan, for a more contained gathering.

Shousou is a separate, more compact experience in the residence's refurbished 1922 storehouse. The counter format places the preparation of sushi at the centre of the meal. Seasonal ingredients shape the courses, and the building's earlier use remains evident in its scale and character. It is a useful choice for guests who want a focused dinner rather than the broader dining-room experience at Suiyou.

The distinction between the two restaurants is substantive: Suiyou uses the old reception room and a garden outlook, while Shousou works within the former warehouse at a sushi counter. Both belong to the historic part of the property, but they offer different ways to inhabit it. The hotel's official dining information identifies them as its two on-site restaurants.

SUI Spa offers treatments informed by Japanese and Chinese herbal traditions, with Nara's plants and wellness culture part of the approach. The treatment experience is separate from the hot-spring baths attached to selected guest rooms. That distinction matters because a guest does not need to book an onsen room to consider a spa treatment, while an in-room bath is tied to the particular room category reserved.

The spa also has a private open-air natural hot-spring bath for hotel guests, subject to its own booking arrangements. It is not a communal bath or an amenity included automatically with every room. This gives guests another way to experience the hotel's hot spring, but availability and use should be checked directly with the property. For a room-centred stay, the named onsen categories remain the clearest option.

Shisui's location is valuable for more than proximity to Nara's major sites. The Yoshikien area has been protected for its greenery, and the hotel faces this landscape at the edge of Nara Park. Kofuku-ji, Todai-ji and Kasuga Taisha are part of the surrounding heritage, but the property does not depend on a full sightseeing schedule to justify an overnight stay. Its rooms, preserved residence, restaurants and spa provide enough to make time at the hotel itself worthwhile.

The strongest reason to choose Shisui is the combination of a genuine civic building and a deliberately small guest-room inventory. A breakfast in the former residence, a counter meal in the storehouse, and a room with a private hot-spring bath are distinct experiences rather than interchangeable luxury touches. Selecting the right room category makes that combination more precise. Even without an onsen room, the architecture and neighbouring garden give the stay a sense of Nara that continues inside the hotel.
