The guestrooms retain the scale of an inn. The Original Farmhouse Queen Room has a queen bed and rainfall shower. A Deluxe King Room sits on the upper floors of the same farmhouse, reached by stairs rather than an elevator. That access detail is as important to check as the room's more spacious bathroom.

Across from the Main House, the Garden Hideaways offer another setting. Their picture windows look toward the grounds, while the rooms range from about 250 to 275 square feet. The Garden Deluxe Hideaway has a soapstone soaking tub and rainfall shower.

The Garden Hideaway has a king bed, granite bathroom and rainfall shower. It is worth distinguishing the two garden categories by their baths rather than assuming the same features throughout. The Garden Hideaway is the shower-focused choice; the Garden Deluxe adds a soaking tub.

The suite range includes a Junior Suite with Fireplace in the Inn and a separate Junior Suite with Fireplace in May's Guest House. Both bring a gas fire into the stay, but their location and room arrangement differ. The Loft Suite has its own entrance, sitting area, fireplace and private balcony.

At about 620 square feet, the Loft is larger than the roughly 420-square-foot junior suites. Its separate entrance matters as much as the extra floor area for a guest who wants a more independent arrival.

May's Cottage sits in the garden across from the Main House. The 400-square-foot space has a sitting area around a gas fireplace, a marble bathroom with a dual-head rainfall shower and a furnished patio overlooking the Rock Pool. It offers a cottage's separation without assuming the river outlook found in some of the other stand-alone accommodations.

Osprey Cottage has a private patio, an infinity-edge soaking tub and living space with a queen sofa bed. Loon Cottage is arranged differently, with two queen bedrooms, two full bathrooms and wraparound windows. Those layouts give guests a more precise choice than a blanket promise of extra cottage space.

Gull and Tern cottages each have a furnished patio, gas fireplace and open-concept layout. Gull has a queen bed, while Tern has a king bed. Their plans are compact beside Osprey and Loon, but they retain the independence of a separate cottage.

The White Barn Inn Houseboats take the waterfront idea further. Cora, Nettie, Grace and Ivory are secured to a private dock on the Kennebunk River. Each has a rooftop deck, a wet bar and interiors by Jenny Wolf.

The four names carry a piece of the inn's history. Cora Toothaker transformed the old barn into an inn nearly a century ago; Nettie, Grace and Ivory, along with Cora, honor members of her founding family. The rooftop decks bring that story into a distinctly riverside setting.

The houseboats are about a seven-minute walk from the inn. That separation is part of their appeal, but it also makes them a different proposition from a room beside the dining barn. Guests who want the waterfront setting should weigh the walk and the dockside location alongside the houseboat's private space.

The White Barn Inn Restaurant occupies the historic barn. Its timber setting gives dinner a sense of occasion without borrowing grandeur from a large dining room.

The kitchen's contemporary New England cooking draws on coastal ingredients and relationships with regional farmers, fishermen and foragers. A meal here is a central part of the inn, not an incidental hotel facility.

Little Barn is a more casual counterpart, with Maine farmstead and fishery ingredients shaping an approachable menu. Its provisions selection offers a less ceremonial way to eat on site. One evening can center on the formal barn restaurant, while another can unfold over a simpler meal without leaving the property.

Private dining can also be arranged in the wine cellar. The room is about 180 square feet and sits among thousands of wine bottles, changing the scale of an occasion from a restaurant table to a space set apart.

The cellar collection holds around 7,000 bottles. That concentration of wine gives a private dinner a character unlike the main barn restaurant or Little Barn: a table set within the collection itself, with the bottles and the small room forming the backdrop to the meal.

The Living Room offers cocktails and small dishes beside a fire. It sits between the two dining moods: less structured than dinner in the barn, yet still within the inn's own spaces. For guests returning from the coast, it is a place to pause before deciding whether the evening calls for a full meal.

Saltwood, Wellbeing by Auberge is the inn's spa. It offers coastal-inspired treatments and facials using Biologique Recherche products. The inn also has a couples spa suite and a sensory rain shower.

The heated infinity pool is outdoors and seasonal, so it plays a different role from Saltwood's treatments. The cottage range offers pool access or Kennebunk River views depending on the accommodation. May's Cottage has its own furnished patio, whether or not swimming is part of the stay.

Kennebunkport's shops and coastal beaches give guests reasons to leave the property, even when its restaurants and spa invite them to stay close. The address is in Kennebunk, a distinction worth keeping clear when planning local outings.

Lighthouse visits and lobster-boat outings take the day toward Maine's working coast. Portland offers a different direction for a day trip, beyond Kennebunk and Kennebunkport's immediate shoreline.

Food connects the property to that setting, too. Cooking alongside the inn's chef brings the region's ingredients out of the dining room and into a hands-on setting. Cocktail-making and wine-and-cheese classes offer other ways to spend time with the inn's culinary side.
