Best for

Grand Wailea Maui is one of Maui's strongest luxury resorts for families because of its pools, beach, activities, and large rooms. Families should plan pool time carefully during busy seasons, since the resort is popular and can feel lively.

What makes it special

Grand Wailea Maui is known for its 40-acre beachfront setting, lush gardens, major pool complex, spa, art, and Waldorf Astoria service. The resort is built for travelers who want an activity-rich Maui stay with beach time, dining, wellness, and family entertainment.

Room to consider

The best room at Grand Wailea Maui depends on whether you want ocean views, more space, wellness amenities, or easier pool access. Book an ocean-view room or suite if scenery matters, and compare tower location if quiet or convenience is important.

Insider tip

Grand Wailea Maui offers several dining venues, including Humuhumunukunukuapua'a, Olivine, Botero Lounge, and casual poolside options. Dining ranges from oceanfront meals and seafood to relaxed resort food, which is useful for families and longer stays.

Grand Wailea Maui

Grand Wailea Maui spreads across 40 acres of tropical gardens above Wailea Beach. The Waldorf Astoria resort has the scale for winding pools and substantial family facilities, but its character also comes from art, Hawaiian cultural activities, and restaurants with very different settings. Bronze sculptures occupy the open-air lobby, while a thatched dining room overlooks a lagoon. The beach remains central to the stay, with the resort grounds extending inland toward the accommodations and spa.

This stunning 2-bedroom suite offers space for larger groups and families. Includes stunning views and high-end comforts. The Suites at Ho'olei sleep 6 people. Size:...

The hotel has 795 rooms and suites, including 58 suites. Its collection of 100 Napua rooms and suites occupies private upper floors within that inventory. The 50 three-bedroom villas at Hoʻolei are listed separately, across the street from the main resort.

Guest rooms begin at 640 square feet and have a private lānai. Garden, terrace, and ocean views distinguish the categories; the beachfront address does not make every room sea-facing. Deluxe Ocean View rooms occupy upper floors in several wings, including Haleakalā and Molokini. The outdoor space extends the room toward the gardens or water, with the outlook depending on the category and position.

For a defined living area, the 1,280-square-foot Honuaʻula Suite has ocean views, a sitting area, a dining table for four, and an additional half bathroom. Napua's Garden and Ocean View rooms measure 715 square feet. The 1,300-square-foot Napua Suite has one bedroom and one-and-a-half bathrooms, with garden or ocean views. That extra bathroom and separate bedroom are useful distinctions for a family sharing a suite, beyond the choice of floor or outlook.

Hoʻolei occupies a gated hillside community across the street, with garden and ocean-view villas ranging from 3,400 to 4,000 square feet. Each has three bedrooms, three-and-a-half bathrooms, a full kitchen, separate living space, and a private lānai. The layouts accommodate six to eight guests, allowing a multigenerational group to share living and dining areas while keeping separate bedrooms.

There is a community pool for Hoʻolei guests, rather than an individual swimming pool attached to every villa. Villas reserved through Grand Wailea's Hoʻolei program carry access to the main resort's amenities. The setting is residential and uphill from the beach, not another oceanfront wing of the hotel.

Wailea Canyon Activity Pool is a network of nine individual pools across six levels. Waterfalls, caves, a lazy river, and seven waterslides turn it into an extended play area, with a sandy baby beach for younger children. The Lava Tube slide makes a three-story descent and requires riders to be taller than 48 inches.

Separate from Wailea Canyon, Hibiscus Serenity Pool is reserved for adults 18 and older. Its mosaic floor and whirlpools give it a different character from the activity complex. Pool wristbands are required. Wailea Beach lies just beyond the grounds and is public, not a private hotel shoreline. Paddleboarding, kayaking, and outrigger canoe outings are available through beach operators; ocean conditions govern time on the water. The pools provide a swimming alternative when the sea is unsuitable.

Kilolani Spa spans 50,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor space, with 40 treatment rooms, including three couples' rooms and two deluxe couples' suites. Hawaiian traditions and the moon calendar inform its approach, including lomilomi massage and treatments using heated stones. The design allows time outdoors between appointments, with gardens, a saltwater vitality pool, and an ocean-facing Reflection Lounge.

The Hydrotherapy Gardens are for guests 18 and older, with access arranged through a spa service or a dedicated pass. Steam rooms, saunas, experience showers, and hydropools form the circuit. A hammam adds a communal bathing space alongside a private treatment room, while the salon and Celebration Suite accommodate hair appointments and group preparations.

Fitness extends to an equipped gym and trainer-led classes in the Movement Studio. Yoga sessions use Wailea Beach and the Chapel Lawn, bringing exercise into the landscape as well as indoors.

Nobu Grand Wailea Maui serves sushi and dishes such as black cod with miso in an indoor-outdoor space by Rockwell Group. Ocean views and murals frame the dining room. Humuhumunukunukuāpuaʻa, often shortened to Humu, takes a seafood-and-steakhouse direction beside a beachfront lagoon. Its thatched roof and circular aquarium bar give dinner a distinctly different setting. Humu also serves breakfast.

At Olivine, coastal Italian cooking meets Maui ingredients, with handmade pasta and an alfresco outlook across the gardens toward the ocean. Botero Lounge brings dining back to the open-air lobby, among nine large bronze sculptures by Fernando Botero. Cocktails, American comfort food, and performances by local musicians give the lounge a social role beyond the art on display. These are individual restaurants and lounges within a room-based resort stay, not an all-inclusive dining plan.

The Grand Wailea Keiki Club welcomes children ages five to twelve, with arts and crafts, games, cultural workshops, and exploratory activities. Operated with childcare specialist itavi, it occupies the fourth-floor Wailea Wing and takes reservations for half-day sessions. Its program changes across the activity calendar.

The Cave provides another gathering place, with billiards, table tennis, shuffleboard, and virtual-reality pods. In-room childcare can also be arranged through itavi. These arrangements sit alongside the outdoor pool attractions, giving families supervised activities and indoor recreation without relying entirely on beach weather.

An in-house art curator leads tours of the collection, introducing works by local and international artists across the property. A separate walk with the Hawaiian Cultural Ambassador explores the resort through the traditions of the islands. The cultural program includes hula, ʻukulele, Hawaiian language, and lauhala weaving, with individual sessions following the activity schedule. The art tour also explores chocolate made with organic cacao grown on the property. Lauhala workshops introduce weaving with pandanus leaves, making a connection between the gardens and a traditional craft. Nearby golf and tennis extend the choice of outdoor activities in Wailea.

Kahului Airport, OGG, is the main arrival point. The drive follows Maui Veterans Highway and Piʻilani Highway south toward Wailea, before turning toward Wailea Alanui Drive. Grand Wailea's address is 3850 Wailea Alanui Drive. Private airport transportation can be arranged through the concierge, and an Enterprise rental-car desk operates at the resort. This also allows guests to arrange a car after arrival for outings beyond Wailea, while keeping the beach, restaurants, and pools as their base in south Maui.
