The contrast with the older sandstone cellars is deliberate, and the colors give the design a connection to the wine itself. This is Gehry's only hotel, a chance to stay within his architecture rather than experience it solely as a visitor.

The hotel has 61 rooms and suites, including 10 suites, spread across two buildings joined by a raised walkway. The Gehry Wing contains the asymmetrical rooms most closely associated with the building's sculptural form. The Spa Wing looks back toward that architecture, with the glass bridge linking the two. Some rooms face the countryside. Others look toward the medieval town of Elciego or the hotel's own architecture. The choice is partly between inhabiting Gehry's angles and looking out at them.

The Gehry Suite has a loft-like layout and a private terrace in the Gehry Wing. Riscal Suite Terrace accommodation, in the Spa Wing, measures approximately 65 square meters and has king or twin beds. Its outdoor area includes lounge chairs and a dining space overlooking the Gehry Wing and Elciego. The marble bathroom has a walk-in shower, bathtub and double sinks.

Inside, white cloud-like bedside lamps and green and black Italian marble bathrooms continue the design detail. Families can request information about the children's bath products, bottle warmers, and corner and outlet guards. Confirm bed arrangements for each adult and child before reserving.

The winery was founded in 1858. Around the Plaza del Reloj, the original bodega, whose construction began in 1860, stands alongside later buildings that trace the estate's growth. Its local stone contrasts with the hotel's metal roof. Barrel cellars, bottle storage and production facilities remain part of a working winery. The square's sundial and red doors give this part of the estate a character quite separate from the guest wings. The complex also has a visitor center, a shop and conference facilities.

A winery visit is central to the experience. The standard Marques de Riscal 1 tour lasts about 90 minutes and combines the winery and vineyard with a three-wine tasting and Rioja charcuterie. English-language visits are available. Hotel guests should coordinate the visit with the reservations team rather than purchase a separate public ticket without checking their arrangements. Children can join selected visits, while tours 2 and 3 are restricted to adults. Those distinctions matter when fitting a tasting around a family stay.

At Restaurante Marques de Riscal, the kitchen is led by Adrian Martin under Francis Paniego's direction. The Torrea and Chirel tasting menus draw on seasonal ingredients and Basque and Riojan traditions. Preparations such as talo with chistorra and Idiazabal cheese sit alongside more contemporary interpretations. This is the meal to give an evening to, with time for the sequence of dishes. Drinks are separate from the tasting menus, so discuss the wine selection when arranging dinner.

1860 Tradicion offers a more relaxed way to taste the region. The second-floor restaurant looks over vineyards and Elciego, serving regional dishes a la carte under Paniego's guidance. Breakfast is also served here. Vinoteca & Bistro, just off the lobby, has estate wines, cocktails, beers and light dishes. Together they make it possible to have a simpler meal without leaving the hotel, rather than organizing every lunch or dinner around a tasting menu.

Asador Torrea adds another option within the City of Wine. Its outdoor grill focuses on meats and seasonal vegetables, with traditional Riojan cooking guiding the menu. It belongs to the wider estate dining experience, distinct from the hotel's second-floor restaurant and lobby bar. Confirm service and a table before building the day's plans around lunch there.

The top-floor Library has books on the region, wine and history, with leather seating gathered around a fireplace. Its terrace sits among Gehry's titanium forms. Coffee, a cocktail or a glass of wine gives you a reason to linger here without committing to another full meal. It also provides a shared outdoor space for guests whose room does not have a terrace.

The Vinotherapie Spa Caudalie Marques de Riscal connects grape-based treatments with a calm wellness setting. Across approximately 1,400 square meters, the facilities include a heated indoor pool with water jets, a whirlpool, steam room, Finnish sauna and foot-bath circuit. Cedar- and teak-lined treatment rooms host facials, massages and scrubs, including the Crush Cabernet Scrub. Barrel baths continue the wine theme. Treatment appointments should be arranged ahead.

A yoga room and a 24-hour fitness center give exercise its own space. Families should confirm children's pool and spa access directly before planning a swimming session. The wellness facilities are within the hotel, unlike the region's outdoor activities and winery excursions. Leave enough time between a treatment and dinner to enjoy the pool or simply sit overlooking the vines.

The Sierra de Cantabria rises beyond the vineyards. The hotel's bicycles, subject to availability, allow for rides through the vineyards and along the Ebro, with picnic hampers available to request. These are separate excursions to plan around the winery visit, not facilities within the hotel grounds.

Elciego itself deserves time on foot. Narrow streets link palaces and traditional houses, while the church of San Andres and the hermitage of the Virgen de la Plaza offer other architectural landmarks. The local tourist office organizes guided walks through the old town. A walk here brings the village seen from the hotel windows into closer focus, with its own history beyond the winery.
