Opened in 1910 by Enea and Maria Gandola, the hotel grew out of their travels through Europe's grand hotels. Its high ceilings, ornate balconies, and Art Nouveau details belong to that early vision. The Belle Epoque character remains clear in the public rooms, where rich colors and decorative furnishings carry through to the lake-facing terraces. This is a hotel with a visible social life, centered on its bars, restaurants, gardens, and waterfront.

The hotel has 77 rooms and suites. Prestige rooms measure 380 square feet for two adults, with either park or lake views; lake-facing rooms have balconies, while park-facing rooms have a bow window or balcony. Deluxe rooms provide 430 square feet for two adults and one child. Junior Suites add space at 550 square feet, with two bow windows overlooking the park or two lake-facing balconies.

The Terrace Garden Suite has a separate sitting room, a main bathroom and a smaller second bathroom. Its 550-square-foot interior accommodates two adults and two children, with a 300-square-foot terrace looking toward the lake. The 900-square-foot Rooftop Grand Suite also sleeps two adults and two children, adding two full bathrooms and a living room with dining space. Its 450-square-foot teak terrace has a Jacuzzi mini-pool and side views of the lake and park.

The Water-on-the-Water pool floats on the lake, with Bellagio and the mountains on the horizon. T Beach brings a lido setting to the shore, with sand, sunbeds, and the hotel's orange-and-white umbrellas. The floating pool allows swimming on the lake without entering open water. Beside this lakefront scene, Da Giacomo al Lago supplies the beach's dining setting.

Up in the gardens, the Flowers Pool has a travertine surround and stone tiling, with planted slopes around it. The third hotel pool is the indoor-outdoor Infinity Pool at T Spa, whose folding doors can open the space to the air. A whirlpool accompanies it. These three settings place swimming at different levels of the property, between the lakeshore, the gardens, and the spa.

La Terrazza Gualtiero Marchesi connects the hotel to the history of modern Italian cooking. Executive chef Osvaldo Presazzi worked alongside Marchesi and continues to prepare his signature dishes. Riso, oro e zafferano and the open raviolo are among the recognizable expressions of that legacy. Presentation is integral to the meal, with careful compositions on the plate and candlelit tables overlooking Lake Como. The restaurant has an elegant dress code and serves both an a la carte menu and a tasting menu.

L'Escale Trattoria & Wine Bar occupies a converted wine cellar with vaulted ceilings and its own veranda facing Bellagio. Northern Italian dishes, including rice with perch and veal cutlet alla milanese, give the menu a regional foundation. The wine list is entirely Italian, with particular attention to smaller producers. A seat at the bar places the lake beyond a long window, while the dining room keeps the character of an enoteca.

Da Giacomo al Lago is the hotel's alfresco outpost of Giacomo Milano. Seafood leads the menu, including crudi, salt-baked fish, and pasta with clams. It belongs to the beach setting, with lunch and seasonal dinner service subject to weather.

T Bar carries the palace's decorative style into its walnut bar, soft divans, and colorful Sala Musica. The wide terrace is a gathering place for aperitifs, with classic cocktails and the hotel's grapefruit-and-rosemary version of a Spritz. Light meals and piano-bar music extend its role beyond a pre-dinner drink.

T Pizza serves wood-fired pizzas beside the Flowers Pool, in the shade of the gardens. The pizzaioli trained in Naples, and the menu also includes salads and vitello tonnato. Its outdoor tables provide a casual lunch setting, with dinner available seasonally and subject to weather.

T Spa occupies eighteenth-century Villa Emilia, once the library of Villa Carlotta, retaining mosaics and frescoes. The thermal circuit includes a lake-view sauna, steam room, Mediterranean bath, ice fountain, and sensory showers. White Lasa marble lines the Italian hammam, which has a heated plinth and a bath for two. Treatments use Santa Maria Novella and Transvital products, with massages and facials among the choices. Spa facilities are reserved for guests aged 16 and over, although selected treatments are available for younger guests.

Fitness has its own building, La Malpensata, an eighteenth-century villa with three floors devoted to cardio, movement and yoga, and strength training. Windows overlook the lake. Personal training is available on request, while the park also has a clay tennis court.

Five acres of grounds rise behind the hotel, with olive trees, palms, and azaleas along the paths. A walk up to the Belvedere opens a view across the central lake toward Bellagio and Varenna. The grounds were once part of Villa Carlotta's botanical gardens, a connection that runs through their history and formal planting.

At the marina, two private jetties serve the hotel's vintage-style boats. Batt was built at Venice's Vizianello shipyard with the lines of a Venetian water taxi; Ruy is a traditional lancia de casada, and Pupa has an open cabin. Private outings can take in the lakeside villas and villages, with departures arranged through the hotel.

Villa Sola Cabiati is a separate, exclusive-use residence less than a mile down the road. Six suites, each with a sitting area and en-suite bathroom, accommodate 12 guests. Frescoes, terrazzo floors, and Murano chandeliers furnish the neoclassical interiors. Arabesque gardens extend across the front of the house. The villa has its own staff, including a private chef and butler, along with a pool in the rear park and a jetty. Its private pool is separate from the hotel's three pools, and the villa is reached by car or boat.
