The settlement first appears in records as Sarna in 1044. From 1050, the name Monastero occurs in connection with nearby Berardenga Abbey. Both restaurants also welcome guests who are not staying at the hotel, giving the tables a life beyond the overnight rooms.

The interiors combine Tuscan country style with modern details, warm colors and textiles. Views vary between the hamlet, gardens and surrounding countryside. The room names describe differences in space and layout, but the outlook is worth considering in its own right. A window toward the piazza gives a different perspective from one facing fields or vines.

Superior Rooms measure 25 to 30 square meters and are designed for two guests. They look toward the hamlet or countryside, and some bathrooms have both a bathtub and a shower. Prestige Rooms increase the space to 45 to 51 square meters. Some add a small lounge area, and an extra bed allows for a third guest. They provide more room without moving into a full suite.

Executive Suites range from 57 to 70 square meters, divided into a bedroom and a large lounge. The sofa bed brings capacity to four, with views toward the countryside or piazza. Villa Lavanda brings a more private household setting to the resort. Its 160 square meters extend over two levels, with three bedrooms and a living room that opens to the terrace. A Finnish sauna, bio-sauna, hammam, Kneipp path, whirlpool and multisensory showers provide a range of water and heat facilities. Massages and yoga add other ways to spend time here. Spa services are for guests aged 16 and over, making this a separate part of the resort from the activities for younger children.

There are three outdoor pools amid the grounds, and these are not heated. Their open-air setting makes them especially appealing in warm weather, with the solarium nearby. A gym provides an indoor exercise option. The distinction between the outdoor swimming areas and the spa's indoor pools gives different parts of the resort their own role through the day.
