The railway explains both the hotel's origins and its position in the city. As more travelers arrived in Zagreb, existing accommodation could no longer meet demand. An architectural competition preceded construction. Otto Rehnig's winning plans were adapted by Dionis Sunko, whose name is closely associated with the completed building. This Central European lineage gives the Esplanade a history beyond its famous guest list. The hotel opened with hot and cold running water, telephones in the rooms, suites and lounges, and a dining room serving Viennese and Hungarian cooking. Pianist Arthur Rubinstein and filmmaker Orson Welles are among the hotel's past guests. Its story belongs to the movement of people through Central Europe, with Zagreb an important stop along the way.

The hotel has 208 rooms and suites. Superior Rooms measure approximately 28 square meters, with marble bathrooms and heated floors and mirrors. Deluxe Rooms are about 36 square meters and add a sitting area with a sofa-bed option. Junior Deluxe Suites, at roughly 45 square meters, provide more sitting space; Deluxe Suites have a separate living room and measure around 60 square meters. The distinction is between space within a room and a genuinely separate room for working or relaxing.

The Presidential Esplanade Suite has approximately 120 square meters, with living and dining areas, a bedroom and views toward Fountain Park. A small kitchen has its own corridor entrance, allowing meals to be served without passing through the bedroom. A jacuzzi bath, private sauna and guest toilet complete the layout. Babysitting, laundry and in-room dining can be arranged for family or longer stays. Sofa-bed arrangements depend on the selected category and confirmed occupancy.

Zinfandel's is the hotel's formal dining room, led by executive chef Ana Grgić Tomić. Her cooking combines Croatian ingredients with international influences, with seasonal menus that allow the kitchen to change direction through the year. The restaurant's name refers to the grape variety associated with both Dalmatia and California, and vines grow in the garden of the Oleander Terrace. Wine has a substantial role here: the list draws heavily on Croatia alongside international producers, with a sommelier guiding pairings. The restaurant also hosts private lunches and dinners, linking the hotel's culinary identity with its role as a meeting place.

Le Bistro brings Croatian cooking and French bistro traditions together in a glazed dining space with its own terrace. It has a closer relationship with the street than the formal restaurant, making it a natural place for breakfast, lunch or an unhurried coffee. The house specialty is Esplanade štrukli: handmade pastry filled with fresh cottage cheese, baked and finished with cream. Its roots lie in Croatian Zagorje, north of Zagreb, and the hotel has served it since 1951. Seasonal ingredients shape the wider menu, while cakes, coffee and wines by the glass give the bistro a life between meals as well.

The Esplanade 1925 Lounge & Cocktail Bar carries the hotel's art deco identity into a less formal setting. Coffee, sandwiches and pastries make it useful during the day, with cocktails providing a reason to stay later. Afternoon tea takes its inspiration from the Orient Express, pairing teas with finger sandwiches and pastries. Tables also serve as places for informal business meetings, so this is an active lounge rather than a room reserved for evening drinks.

In suitable weather, the Oleander Terrace extends that social life outdoors. Lunch, a drink or a private reception can take place with the city as a backdrop. A Champagne bar and views across the surrounding streets keep the terrace closely connected to the life of central Zagreb. It is one of the Esplanade's distinctive public settings, used by local visitors as well as travelers staying upstairs.

The Health Club combines a compact fitness area with massage and beauty treatments. Separate male and female saunas accompany the gym, whose equipment includes treadmills and exercise bikes. Personal training can be arranged, and the club also works with small groups. The facilities support a workout or a booked treatment within a city stay, without requiring a separate journey to a fitness studio. Facial care and body treatments are available through the club's specialists. Appointments are handled by the Health Club team, and access is also available to outside visitors when space permits.

The Emerald Ballroom has a high domed ceiling above its dining and reception space. Smaller gatherings use meeting rooms and the Historic Boardroom, while audiovisual equipment and technical support serve conferences and presentations. Private dining can accompany the meeting program. The events team coordinates the space, catering and technical requirements.

The address is Mihanovićeva 1, beside the main railway station and near the Botanical Garden. From here, the Lower Town's parks and streets lead toward Ban Jelačić Square, about 15 minutes away on foot. The Croatian National Theatre and the Art Pavilion are nearby architectural landmarks, while the Upper Town lies farther uphill. The station and tram stops are close enough to make rail arrival and local transport practical parts of the stay. This is a central urban setting, with streets and transport around it rather than secluded grounds.

Allow roughly 30 minutes for the drive from Zagreb Airport, with traffic affecting the journey. Limousine transfers and valet parking can be arranged.

The concierge can assist with restaurant reservations, theater and concert tickets, guided tours and trips outside the city. These services are useful for building a stay around particular interests, rather than following a fixed sightseeing program.
