Farmhouse Inn's history is closely tied to siblings Catherine and Joe, who bought the inn in 2001. Their family's Sonoma roots reach back to their great-grandfather, Domenico Giovanetti, a stonemason from near Como in Italy. After working in San Francisco, he settled in Sonoma County, where the family farmed hops and established a ranch. The siblings brought that background in farming and hospitality to the inn, with dining central to its development.

The Historic Farmhouse Rooms sit above the restaurant in the original 1873 building. These are petite rooms with fireplaces and oversized bathrooms containing soaking tubs and steam showers. Their upstairs position is a defining part of the layout.

Cottages have private entrances and outdoor seating near the gardens, along with gas fireplaces, steam showers, heated marble bathroom floors, and deep soaking tubs. The Cottage Petite Suite adds a full-size bed in an alcove beside the king bedroom. A barn door separates the alcove, giving this category a distinct sleeping arrangement.

Barn Junior Suites have floor-to-ceiling windows, an indoor-outdoor fireplace, a private deck or patio, and a two-person tub. Farther back on the property, the Barn One Bedroom Suite has a separate living room and king bedroom, a broad patio, and a dual fireplace. Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve, north of Guerneville, preserves a grove of coast redwoods.
