The former Carmelite convent was inaugurated in 1651, following a petition supported by Doña Ana de Lansos y Menéndez de Valdez. She financed its construction and became its mother superior. The building served the religious community for more than two centuries before taking on other uses. Robert Frederic Woolworth later acquired it, and El Convento opened as a hotel in 1962. Three-foot-thick walls, mahogany and ironwood doors, ornamental ironwork and the central courtyard explain more of its character than the familiar label of a historic hotel. The hotel also organizes a guided walking tour linking El Convento's story with the surrounding old city. Places are reserved in advance, and the tour follows a set schedule rather than running on demand.

The hotel has 81 accommodations, with rooms, junior suites and signature suites in its collection. Views and outdoor spaces vary. Queen Vista rooms have a Juliet balcony facing the bay or historic city, while Double Vista rooms overlook the cathedral and town square and have two full-size beds.

Families and small groups have a practical option in the Double Bed Suite, which has two double beds, separate living and sleeping areas and access convenient to the pool. The hotel lists this category for four adults. Garden Terrace rooms, meanwhile, have a king bed and a private terrace with space to sit outside. Their high ceilings and outdoor area give them a different layout from the balcony categories.

The Gloria Vanderbilt Suite takes its name from the hotel's first guest. Its king bedroom is paired with a marble bathroom containing a jetted tub. Two sets of Spanish louver doors open to a Juliet balcony overlooking Plaza de las Monjas and the historic city. The hotel lists the suite for two adults.

The Pablo Casals Suite is a one-bedroom layout with a king bed, antique marble floors and louver doors opening toward the cathedral. Its name honors the cellist associated with Puerto Rico's Casals Festival. The Woolworth Suite has a more inward-looking setting, with two bay-window alcoves overlooking the courtyard. Sixteen-foot antique ceilings rise above separate living and sleeping areas, and a walk-in closet adds storage. The different configurations make these suites individual rooms to consider, not interchangeable versions of the same floor plan.

The courtyard is one of the hotel's defining spaces. Patio del Níspero brings guests into an open-air setting framed by arches and historic walls, with tables beside a large tree. The restaurant serves Puerto Rican and international cooking, with breakfast, brunch, lunch and dinner menus. Its setting is as important as its culinary role: meals take place within the building's courtyard, with the galleries above and the sky overhead.

Alegría Patio Bar provides a place for drinks within that courtyard setting, without leaving the hotel for the evening. In-room dining covers breakfast and later meals for guests who prefer to eat upstairs. The surrounding streets provide further restaurants within the old city. The hotel can assist with outside reservations.

The rooftop plunge pool and heated jacuzzi overlook San Juan Bay. This is a compact pool terrace for a dip and time on a lounger, not a swimming-lap facility. La Veranda Terrace hosts the hotel's daily wine and cheese reception, with views across Old San Juan. It provides a place to pause between sightseeing and dinner. A fitness center is available around the clock, with cardio equipment and weights for an indoor workout.

Beach time takes place away from the hotel, through an arrangement at Courtyard by Marriott Isla Verde Beach Resort. El Convento describes lounge chairs and umbrellas as part of that beach access. Reaching Isla Verde requires a separate journey from the old city; the arrangement does not make El Convento beachfront. Guest services can explain the access arrangements and organize transportation. For a stay centered on the historic district, it adds a beach outing without changing hotels.

The hotel's five event venues range from a boardroom to the former chapel. Salón Campeche retains murals and antique lanterns, with stained glass, marble floors and a vaulted ceiling. Salón Martorell presents work by Puerto Rican artist Antonio Martorell and pays tribute to women associated with faith and Spanish-language literature. These are distinct interiors within the hotel, used for gatherings as well as appreciated for their decorative character.

Salón Paoli and Salón Oller provide further reception and meeting settings, measuring 1,800 and 1,008 square feet respectively. The Executive Boardroom has mahogany furnishings and a ten-person layout. A dedicated banquet kitchen, catering team and event coordination support private meals, receptions and weddings. The hotel also arranges rehearsal dinners and other parts of a wedding stay. Campeche is the larger, more dramatic choice: its 2,800 square feet sit beneath a vaulted ceiling reaching 50 feet, giving a wedding dinner a markedly different setting from a boardroom gathering.

From the front door, guests can walk to the cathedral, plazas, cafés, galleries, bars, boutiques and the famous forts. El Morro and the old city walls give walks a seafront perspective, while food-focused walking tours can introduce the neighborhood through its kitchens. Guest services can arrange guided walks, museum tickets and wider island itineraries. For a change from the city, an excursion to El Yunque takes the day into rainforest trails, waterfalls and scenic overlooks, with separate transport to arrange.

The address is 100 Calle del Cristo. Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport is the main arrival point; the hotel estimates a 15-minute drive, though traffic can lengthen the trip. Airport and local transfers can be arranged through guest services. This location also works for a city stay around a cruise, but the specific pier matters when arranging transport. Within the old district, the appeal is being able to step out into its streets and return to the courtyard between visits.
