Best for

Hotel Esencia is best for luxury travellers who want a quiet, design-led Riviera Maya beach estate with privacy, refined food, serious wellness, beautiful rooms, and a location between Tulum and Playa del Carmen. It is less ideal for guests who want all-inclusive entertainment, nightlife on the door…

Room to consider

For most guests, the best suite depends on whether you want beach proximity, jungle privacy, or wellness features. Beach Suites and Master Beach Suites are best for guests who want the Caribbean close.

Insider tip

Hotel Esencia has Taiyo, Beefbar Esencia, Mistura, Coffee Bar & Juice Bar, and Beach Bar. Taiyo is a Japanese concept with a Mexican twist and an omakase bar.

Hotel Esencia

Hotel Esencia's Main House anchors a 50-acre estate on Xpu-Ha Beach, between Playa del Carmen and Tulum. Originally a private home for an Italian duchess, it remains the centerpiece of a hotel whose paths lead through gardens to 47 suites and four villas. Jungle, white sand, palms and the Caribbean give the property its setting. The original residential scale still shapes the experience: accommodation is spread around the grounds, with the house providing a point of reference as you move between the gardens and shore. Sea turtles also nest along this stretch of the bay.

The choice of suite changes your relationship with the landscape. Jungle Suites sit among the greenery, while Master Ocean Suites face the Caribbean from the Main House or nearby buildings. Beach Suites bring direct proximity to the sand, and Master Beach Suites have a beachfront position with sea views. Terraces and sitting areas extend the accommodation outdoors, but an ocean outlook is specific to the category, not a feature of every room.

Jungle Suites With Plunge Pool have either an indoor or outdoor pool. Rooftop Wellness Suites pair a private fitness studio with a rooftop terrace and pool. For a family sharing one residence, Pool Villas have two bedrooms. Yum Ha Villa is a separate colonial-style option adjacent to the hotel. The Esencia Suite occupies the Main House, while the Presidential Bungalow has its own beachfront palapa. These distinctions are worth more than a general suite label: a rooftop pool, a garden setting and a beachfront position each describe a different way to stay.

The Esencia Mansion gives a larger group four bedrooms arranged across four levels, with en-suite bathrooms and entrances that are separate yet also connected internally. Its three swimming pools include one on the rooftop, where the view reaches over the jungle to the sea. The primary bedroom occupies the third level, alongside a fitness studio and office. The other bedrooms have outdoor terraces, and two also have separate lounges. Below, an eat-in kitchen connects to a breakfast terrace, and the main living room opens toward an outdoor dining area. Ceramic tiles by artist Marcel Dzama distinguish the large family pool. A private screening room seats 20, giving the house a gathering space beyond its terraces. The beach and restaurants are approximately a five-minute walk from the Mansion. A separate staff kitchen supports meals in the house, and a palapa beside the family pool provides a shaded sitting area.

The hotel's heated pools provide an alternative to swimming in the Caribbean, and a children's pool gives younger guests their own swimming space. Beach access is direct, although sea conditions determine the swimming experience on any given day. Water-sports equipment is available through the hotel. Families can arrange babysitting, while laundry and dry-cleaning services help with the practical side of a longer visit. Housekeeping visits twice daily, and the multilingual team can assist with translation. A library provides another place to spend time indoors. The concierge is available around the clock for arrangements on and off the estate. Packing and unpacking assistance is available, useful when several family members share a villa.

Mistura sits beneath a tall beachfront palapa, with the Caribbean spread out beyond the tables. Mexican cooking with a Mediterranean touch shapes the menu, which includes seafood and dishes from the grill. Breakfast, lunch and dinner share this seaside setting. The Coffee Bar at Mistura serves freshly ground coffee, including beans from Mexican growing regions, with house-made Mexican pastries. The Juice Bar adds juices and smoothies. At the Beach Bar, cocktails are served in a two-story beachfront palapa, keeping drinks close to the water.

Taiyo takes a different culinary direction beside the pool. Its Japanese cooking has a Mexican influence, with sushi at its center and an omakase bar where the chef selects the sequence. Beefbar Esencia occupies the Palm Garden, with an open kitchen and brick oven. The emphasis is on carefully sourced beef, including Australian Wagyu and Japanese Kobe, alongside comfort-food dishes. Together, the three restaurants span distinct settings as well as cuisines.

At the eastern end of the gardens, Esencia Spa sits under traditional thatched roofs, with circular forms inspired by Mayan design. Its organic kitchen prepares herbs, oils, spices and honey for balms and scrubs. The facilities include steam rooms, an infrared sauna, an ice chamber, Swiss showers, a cold plunge and a hydromassage hot tub. A temazcal sweat lodge adds a traditional heat-bathing setting, while a sensory deprivation tank provides another distinct treatment option.

The climate-controlled gym has a high thatched ceiling above its cardio equipment and weights. Sunrise yoga brings movement into the morning, and personal instruction is available. There is also a tennis court with a seating pavilion; the concierge can have this same court configured for pickleball.

A mangrove-fringed lagoon lies a short walk along the beach to the north. The hotel organizes snorkeling, kayaking and paddleboarding there, with a picnic at the adjoining coastal cove as another option. Back on the estate, cooking and mixology lessons introduce a more participatory side of the kitchens and bars. Private dinners, Mexican spirits tastings and beach bonfires can also be organized around an individual stay or gathering.

Day trips can take you to the Mayan ruins of Tulum, the underground river at Rio Secreto and the landscapes of Sian Ka'an. These are separate excursions, not attractions within the grounds. Chichen Itza involves a longer drive into the Yucatan. The coast's archaeological sites and cenotes give a beach stay a wider geographical scope, with outings ranging from underground waterways to the Mayan cities inland.

Hotel Esencia's entrance is on the Cancun-Tulum highway at kilometer 265, south of Playa del Carmen. Private car transfers can be arranged from Cancun International Airport. The drive from Tulum takes about 30 minutes, depending on traffic; the address is on the Riviera Maya coast, not in either town center. Guests arriving at the gates are taken through the grounds to their accommodation. Helicopter transfers can also be arranged, using the hotel's own landing area.

What to Know About Hotel Esencia

Who should stay at Hotel Esencia?

Hotel Esencia is best for luxury travellers who want a quiet, design-led Riviera Maya beach estate with privacy, refined food, serious wellness, beautiful rooms, and a location between Tulum and Playa del Carmen. It is less ideal for guests who want all-inclusive entertainment, nightlife on the doorstep, a large family resort, or a high-energy Tulum scene. For discreet beachfront luxury in Xpu-Ha, it is one of Mexico's most compelling choices.

Is Hotel Esencia good for a honeymoon?

Yes. Hotel Esencia is excellent for a honeymoon because it combines privacy, beach beauty, elegant suites, strong restaurants, serious spa facilities, and a discreet atmosphere away from the busiest Riviera Maya areas. For the most romantic stay, compare Beach Suites, Rooftop Wellness Suites, and private-pool categories. The best choice depends on whether your honeymoon is more about waking up by the sea, total privacy, or wellness-focused downtime.

Is Mistura at Hotel Esencia worth it?

Yes. Mistura is worth planning for because it captures the hotel at its most Riviera Maya-specific: a beachfront palapa, 180-degree Caribbean views, seafood, grill specialities, Mexican ingredients, and a Mediterranean touch. It is usually the restaurant that feels most connected to the beach. Taiyo is better for Japanese-Mexican dining, while Beefbar is better for a polished meat-focused dinner.

What restaurants are at Hotel Esencia?

Hotel Esencia has Taiyo, Beefbar Esencia, Mistura, Coffee Bar & Juice Bar, and Beach Bar. Taiyo is a Japanese concept with a Mexican twist and an omakase bar. Beefbar focuses on high-quality meats in the palm garden. Mistura is the beachfront Mexican-Mediterranean restaurant with Caribbean views. This dining range is one of the reasons the hotel works for longer stays. Guests can move between sea-to-table dining, sushi, steakhouse energy, coffee, juices, and beach cocktails without leaving the estate.

Is Esencia Spa worth it?

Yes. Esencia Spa is worth it if wellness is part of why you are choosing the hotel. It is more substantial than a simple beach-hotel treatment room, with heat, cold, water, Mayan-inspired rituals, and a strong sense of place. It is especially good for couples, solo reset stays, and guests who want the resort to feel restorative rather than only beautiful.
