The Rosewood Miyakojima is a luxurious resort nestled on the shores of Miyakojima in Japan's Okinawa Prefecture. It offers a unique blend of natural beauty and luxury. This hotel is Rosewood Hotels & Resorts' first Japanese property. The resort draws inspiration from its natural surroundings. The private villas feature views of the ocean and private pools. Moreover, the interiors combine contemporary design with Japanese aesthetics. Read on to find out more about this property.
This retreat celebrates the spirit of Ryukyu Island. Piet Bohn, the renowned Dutch architect, has created a resort that uses local materials to reflect the island's natural beauty. The four dining options offer Japanese cuisine and other international dishes.
Miyakojima lies in the Okinawa area, nearer to Taipei and Tokyo than Osaka. There are direct flights to Osaka and Tokyo, which take three hours. Okinawa is also popular with tourists who love its subtropical scenery, coral reefs, and colorful food.
Rosewood Miyakojima resides on a private peninsula that juts northward at the top of Miyako. This means the "Miyako Blue" waters surround it on three sides.
The hotel also sits in a natural area along the coast. It features two white-sand beaches, sparkling water, and weathered Ryukyu limestone rocks. This is a spiritual area of the island. Several holy spots, known as Utaki, exist as natural places where people believe the gods live. People are not allowed to enter these natural spots, even hotel guests.
The opening of the first Rosewood in Japan is part of the luxury hotel group's expansion. Recent rope cuttings have taken place in Hawaii, New Zealand, and Germany, and many more are planned.
Studio Piet Boon, a Dutch architectural firm, designed and built the resort, which is a brand-new project. Studio Piet Boon has built the first luxury hotel in Japan's south.
Rosewood Miyakojima is the Hong Kong-based group's Japan debut. Studio Piet Boon, a Dutch design firm, designed it to blend with natural landscapes, including seas, skies, mountains, and forests. This collection of concrete houses and villas is in earthy colors. There are also four bars and restaurants, an infinity pool, and a wellness area.
Nature plays a vital role here. Piet Bohn spent five years designing the hotel. His goal was to blend its look with its cultural features. The structures are concrete, clean, and designed to fit in with the environment.
Moreover, the façades have earthy shades of brown, gray, and clay. As time passes, the white Ryukyu limestone stones (on pathways and walls) will begin to darken in color. They will match the rocks on the shores.
All 55 guest villas have a sea view, whether from your bed or on the large decks with private pools. Moreover, there are Ryukyu-stone bathrooms in caramel hues with large tubs filled with natural loofahs. There are also handmade soaps and Yukishima salts that smell of medicinal herbs.
The Dutch designers have also applied Japanese sensibility to other areas of the hotel. They have Genkan entryways for taking off and storing shoes. They also include sliding wooden doors. In addition, the tokonoma displays highlight Japanese arts and crafts.
There are four tempting dining and drinking choices. The chef in charge of the kitchens has worked at five-star restaurants worldwide. Nagi is the main dining area, and breakfast is usually served with a view of the main pool or beach.
You can also choose from a wide range of Japanese food, such as salmon onigiri, miso soup, pickled vegetables, and slow cooked onsen tamago eggs. You can also enjoy yogurt or cereals. Moreover, they serve Italian dishes throughout the day. These include wagyu tartare beef, lobster stew, and hearty saffron rice balls.
Yukku, the poolside bar, also offers salads, burgers, and other tasty snacks. It also serves sexy cocktail recipes that feature local ingredients.
In addition, the seafood at the hotel's Japanese restaurant, Choma, is excellent. Local fishermen spear grouper and other delicacies in the nearby bay by moonlight. You can try some of its exceptional dishes, such as peanut tofu and sea urchin.
Asaya is Rosewood's new wellness concept. It attracts many guests despite this region of Japan being devoid of hot springs. Spa facilities include a gym and yoga studio scattered throughout the garden and six cozy treatment rooms. There are also separate female and male hydrotherapy areas. These facilities include a sauna, steam room, hydrotherapy facilities, whirlpool, and an outdoor pool.
Moreover, the therapists provide many local body treatments and face masks. Daily classes, including yoga, stretching, and flow Pilates, are also offered for free. You can also explore the coast or countryside with kayaks, paddleboards, and bikes.
Miyakojima is a summer retreat. It offers various activities, from snorkeling among the green turtles to scuba diving into tunnels and caves. There are also catamaran excursions around the coast or sunset cruises. Thanks to its strong cultural heritage, it offers plenty of appeal outside the summer.
Moreover, a twilight trip to Higashi Hennazaki Peninsula is an adventure you can't miss. It's dotted with massive 'tsunami stones' catapulted into the sea during the Great Tidal Wave of 1771. The 300-year-old studio is also a great place to learn how to make Ryukyuan ceramics. A "living national treasure" of Japan helms it.
Rosewood Miyakojima has a perfect design and a deeply rooted sense of place. Every detail reflects a commitment to elegance and authenticity. The resort offers a unique experience.
