The building once housed monks from Santa Maria Novella and later belonged to aristocratic Florentine families. It became an inn in 1848. Architects Carlo Scarpa and Edoardo Detti shaped its midcentury identity, bringing modern design into a building with a much longer history. Surviving frescoes and hand-painted wooden beams remain part of that history, giving the interiors texture that goes beyond their furniture and decoration.

Art runs through the public spaces as well as the accommodations. The collection includes work by Emilio Greco and Carlo Carrà, while the Florentine composer and artist Giuseppe Chiari brings a different, experimental voice. These are individual works encountered while moving through the hotel, with older architectural elements still visible around them. Premium rooms measure 22 square meters and face inward; Premium Florence View rooms have panoramic outlooks but a smaller 18-square-meter footprint. The distinction is between outlook and space, not simply a larger room at each step.

The 55-square-meter 103 Open Space Frescoed Suite has a four-poster king bed, convertible sofa, original frescoes, and a balcony facing the piazza and church. Its bathroom has a separate bathtub and shower. Duplex Suites spread 70 square meters over two levels, with a king bed, two daybeds, and a marble bathroom on each floor. They accommodate up to four adults; only some have balconies.

Families can also use connecting Premium and Premium Comfort rooms, starting at 48 square meters for up to five guests. The 40-square-meter 106 Terrace Junior Suite pairs a king or twin beds with a daybed and a private terrace overlooking an internal courtyard, plus a bathroom with a walk-in shower.

The heated rooftop pool is seasonal and reserved for hotel guests. Florence surrounds it: the Duomo, the church, and the city's roofline are all part of the view. Loungers and a seating area frame the water, with bar service nearby. The pool belongs to the scale of a city rooftop, suited to a dip and time on a lounger, with the panorama providing much of its appeal.

La Terrazza Pool Bar adds cocktails and light food to this setting. A Terrace Negroni is the hotel's signature suggestion, while pizza and snacks feature in the evening. The bar operates seasonally, and outside visitors can join for evening drinks. Pool access remains for hotel guests, so an evening bar reservation is distinct from access to the water. Sofas and deckchairs give the terrace several ways to settle in, whether the focus is the skyline or a drink.

La Buona Novella serves Italian cuisine with a Tuscan foundation and an emphasis on vegetables. Large windows face Piazza Santa Maria Novella, and Carlo Scarpa's design and the art on the walls give the dining room a clear relationship to the rest of the hotel. Lunch and dinner take place against the backdrop of the square.

The restaurant also extends outdoors to Al Fresco, where tables face the church's marble facade and a garden with pink rosebushes. Tables here are served from La Buona Novella's menu. The setting accommodates morning coffee, lunch, cocktails, snacks, and dinner. Its appeal lies in that close view of the piazza: the architecture remains directly in front of the table, at the level of the street.

Breakfast has its own setting in a Scarpa-designed room, with a large glass wall overlooking a Japanese garden. The buffet draws on Tuscan products and homemade baking, with a dedicated vegan corner. Works by Giuseppe Chiari appear on the walls. Garden, glass, and art give this room a different visual character from the restaurant's windows onto the square, while keeping the same interest in design.

The Bistrot Bar preserves another tangible piece of Scarpa's work: his barstools remain in use. Cocktails are served here within the hotel's historic interiors. It is an indoor place for an aperitif, with the furniture itself part of the experience and a close-up example of the design found throughout the building.

A panoramic gym provides space to exercise indoors. Access is by reservation, allowing a workout to be arranged around time in the city.

For meetings, the hotel has four rooms with natural daylight. On the ground floor, the Emilio Greco center contains three smaller rooms with movable partitions, while the Carlo Scarpa room can be used for meetings, a showroom, or private dining. These spaces support smaller gatherings within the hotel rather than requiring travel to a separate venue.

The neighboring basilica rewards a visit beyond the view from the hotel. Its marble facade is associated with Leon Battista Alberti, and inside are works by Giotto, Masaccio, and Brunelleschi. The cloisters contain frescoes by Paolo Uccello. Staying on this square puts a substantial part of Florence's artistic history immediately beside the hotel, with both the church interior and cloisters adding depth to the architecture seen from the terrace.

Nearby on Via della Scala, the Officina Profumo-Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella occupies its historic address at number 16.
