Built in 1888 as a hunting lodge for the Austrian imperial family, the property became part of Lake Garda's tradition of welcoming travelers from northern Europe. An expansion in 1903 established more of its hotel character. Neoclassical architecture, marble, and Italian furnishings still give the interiors their formal structure, while the lake remains the main point of orientation outside. The historic pier connects that architectural setting directly to the water.

Inside, pale colors and high nineteenth-century ceilings retain the proportions of an older grand hotel. Outside, the park's subtropical planting frames the shoreline. Villa Principe is part of this same garden setting, a short distance from the main residence. Its guest rooms share the restaurants and spa facilities of the wider hotel, with paths through the park linking the buildings.

The hotel has 86 accommodations, including four suites and 12 rooms in Villa Principe. Views vary by category, from full lake views to partial views and rooms without a lake outlook. Connecting and family rooms are available, with the configuration arranged for the traveling party. The distinction between the main building and Villa Principe matters alongside room size and outlook.

Superior Lake View Rooms measure 20 to 25 square meters, while Deluxe Lake View Rooms expand to 30 to 35. Executive Rooms in the main hotel have 40 to 45 square meters and a lake-facing balcony. Their published maximum occupancy is four, subject to the bedding arrangement. Villa Principe's Standard Partial Lake View Rooms occupy 20 to 25 square meters. Standard Rooms without a lake view can be in either building and do not have a balcony.

The 90-square-meter Suites have a bedroom, a separate living room, and a balcony overlooking Lake Garda. They are in the main hotel and accommodate up to four guests. An open-plan bathroom is a particular feature of the suite design, alongside the generous living space.

Il Fagiano is the hotel's gastronomic restaurant, led by Maurizio Bufi. His cooking brings his Puglian background into contact with northern Italian ingredients and Lake Garda traditions. Dinner can follow a tasting menu or an à la carte selection, with wine and cocktail pairings also available. The restaurant holds one Michelin star. Reservations are required, and the smart-casual dress code reflects the more formal dining-room setting.

Magnolia serves lunch beneath mature magnolia trees, with Valerio Dallamano's menu rooted in Italian cooking. He also leads Osteria Il Pescatore, where dinner takes place beside the lake. Its Mediterranean menu allows for international influences, and the terrace keeps the water close to the table. These are distinct settings within the grounds, with shaded garden lunches at Magnolia and lakeside dinners at the Osteria.

Bistrò 1888 takes its name from the hotel's founding year and occupies a garden setting with glimpses of the lake. Its afternoon service adds an informal stop between lunch and dinner. La Terrazza serves drinks, infusions, and snacks by the water, extending the choice of outdoor tables beyond the restaurants.

Ramas Lounge Bar moves indoors to plush seating and walls hung with historic photographs of the hotel. Rama Redzepi directs the cocktail program, with a substantial gin and tonic selection among its specialties. The room draws on the character of Havana bars and New York lounges, giving it a different visual identity from the garden terraces. The photographs keep the hotel's own history present within this evening space.

AQVA Spa covers more than 3,500 square meters. Its facilities include an indoor pool, a hot tub, and two outdoor pools, one with a slide. Covered access connects indoor and outdoor areas, and a Winter Garden looks toward the lake. Saunas, a Turkish bath, and hydromassage facilities form the water and heat circuit. The gym is open around the clock.

Treatments use Sothys products and range from facials to massages and body rituals. Exfoliation and wraps feature alongside more focused appointments. The Japanese-inspired Hanakasumi ritual combines a body scrub with work on the feet, while the signature 1’888 GHF treatment combines body exfoliation and eye care. The menu separates these appointments from time in the pools and heat facilities, allowing a short treatment or a longer spa visit.

Families can use the pools, but children must be accompanied by an adult. Saunas and steam rooms are reserved for adults. Children's activities can be arranged on request through the hotel. The outdoor pool with a slide adds a clear family feature to the grounds. Small dogs are also welcome at the hotel and may accompany guests to Osteria Il Pescatore, though not to Il Fagiano.

Boat trips leave from the hotel's dock, making the lake a route out from the property as well as a view from it. A Riva motorboat excursion crosses to Punta San Vigilio on the opposite shore, with lunch at Locanda San Vigilio forming part of the itinerary. The hotel arranges these outings aboard Riva Aquariva and Aquarama boats, returning to its own pier after the visit.

The concierge also arranges wine and olive oil experiences and private cooking sessions. Farther afield, the hotel's excursion suggestions include the gardens of Sigurtà Park and the cable car from Malcesine to Monte Baldo. The latter reaches a landscape of walking and cycling routes above the lake. These trips take place beyond the property, with arrangements depending on the chosen activity.

Verona and Bergamo are airport options, along with Milan Linate and Malpensa. Rail travelers can arrive at Desenzano del Garda and continue by car or taxi to Gardone Riviera. For drivers, the hotel gives routes from the A4 via Desenzano or Brescia Est, continuing toward Salò and Gardone. Airport and station transfers can be arranged on request. Private parking and electric-vehicle charging are available at the hotel, whose entrance is on Via Zanardelli.
