Hotel Cipriani, A Belmond Hotel, Venice

Hotel Cipriani, A Belmond Hotel, occupies the eastern tip of Giudecca, across the water from St Mark's Square in Venice. The private launch takes about five minutes, but the gardens and large outdoor pool give a stay here a different rhythm from one spent entirely among the city's lanes. You can devote a morning to Venice and leave the afternoon open for a swim, a long lunch or a treatment at Dior Spa.

Giuseppe Cipriani opened the hotel in 1958. Its appeal still rests on that combination of city access and room to linger. Leave some of your itinerary unplanned to enjoy the grounds. The boat crossing is worth considering before booking: San Marco is close, but you cannot step straight out into its streets.

Accommodation occupies the main hotel and Palazzo Vendramin, a 15th-century building reached through a courtyard and flowered passage. Belmond lists 55 rooms and 20 suites, with four named Signature Suites in its collection. Double rooms, junior suites and larger suites offer different relationships with the water and gardens. A balcony, a patio and a view toward St Mark's are distinct choices here, rather than details to assume across every category.

Venetian fabrics and marble bathrooms give the interiors their local character. Some rooms look across the lagoon; others face greenery or the pool. Junior suites add sitting space, while the larger suites allow more separation between relaxing and sleeping. For a longer visit, the layout matters as much as the view. Check the individual category carefully if outdoor space is a priority, since balconies and terraces are not universal.

The 61-74-square-meter St Mark's View Suite in Palazzo Vendramin faces the square and Doge's Palace and accommodates up to three with a rollaway bed. In the main building, the San Giorgio Suite has lagoon and island views and permits up to four with two rollaway beds. The Vigneto Suite instead overlooks the Casanova Gardens and has a furnished balcony, with space for four using two requested extra beds.

Palladio, Dogaressa, Laguna and Serenissima are the hotel's Signature Suites. Palladio's defining feature is its broad lagoon outlook, complemented by separate living and dining areas and a terrace with a heated plunge pool and whirlpool. It is a reason to reserve time at the hotel itself, particularly if private outdoor relaxation matters more than adding another excursion.

Dogaressa is in Palazzo Vendramin, with St Mark's and Doge's Palace views, original artworks and antique furnishings. Laguna and Serenissima are in the main building: the former has a furnished patio, the latter a terrace and French balconies. Both face the lagoon and San Giorgio Island. Importantly, these two suites accommodate two adults only; children are not permitted. A larger floor plan therefore does not automatically make a suite the right family option.

Oro brings a more deliberate evening to the stay. Vania Ghedini leads the Michelin-starred kitchen under Massimo Bottura's culinary direction, drawing on ingredients from the lagoon and Veneto. The restaurant offers tasting and a la carte menus, with a sommelier to guide wine choices or nonalcoholic alternatives. Peter Marino's interiors frame the waterside setting without making the view the whole occasion. Allow time for dinner here, rather than fitting it between other plans.

Cip's Club has a looser mood, with a terrace over the water facing St Mark's. Venetian dishes, Murano glassware and the passing boats make it an appealing place to settle into the evening. Its position is particularly useful for guests who want the city's skyline at dinner without crossing back to San Marco. You can enjoy the same broad setting as the hotel while changing the pace from Oro's tasting-menu experience.

Il Porticciolo serves Italian classics beside the water, within easy reach of the pool. Bar Gabbiano is the poolside meeting point for a drink, including a Bellini. Ristorante San Giorgio adds another option for an aperitif and dinner overlooking the lagoon, while Bacaro Dior takes its cue from the Venetian osteria. Menus and service times differ between venues, so reserve the meals that matter rather than assuming each restaurant follows the same schedule.

For anyone comparing Venice hotels with a pool, Cipriani's outdoor saltwater pool deserves attention. It is heated, with room for proper swimming as well as an afternoon beside the water. Cabanas feature Rubelli fabrics, and drinks and light food are available poolside. The pool is also a social part of the hotel, rather than a secluded extension of the spa.

Families should note the published minimum age of four, with parental supervision required. The Casanova Gardens provide a different outdoor setting for a walk or time away from the pool. Together, these spaces make it possible to plan a less crowded day without leaving the grounds. That flexibility is especially useful when different members of the family want different amounts of sightseeing.

Dior Spa Hotel Cipriani extends over two floors with five treatment cabins. Peter Marino's design uses Venetian terrazzo, stucco and soft colors, linking the interiors to the gardens and pool outside. The menu includes facial and body treatments, with Venice-inspired rituals alongside Dior's established treatments. The interest lies in the setting and the choice of care, not in promises of a particular health result.

A fitness center supports a regular workout, and yoga and Pilates are among the hotel's wellness activities. The red-clay tennis court sits beside the lagoon, with private lessons available to arrange. These options give an active traveler something to do beyond walking through Venice, while allowing companions to keep their own plans. Book lessons or treatments ahead when timing is important.

The hotel lists a children's club and can arrange family activities through the concierge. Extra beds and cots are available in selected accommodation on request; restaurants provide children's menus and highchairs, and babysitting can be requested. Confirm the room configuration and the club arrangements for your dates before relying on them. Twenty-four-hour room service also gives families an alternative to another restaurant meal after a long day out.

Beyond San Marco, the hotel's excursions include lagoon tours, island vineyards, the Jewish Quarter and gondola outings. A boat trip and a walking visit offer very different perspectives, so there is little need to pack both into every day. The concierge can help organize an itinerary around your interests, with individual experiences subject to arrangements and availability.

Arrival is normally by water. A private water taxi can take you directly to the hotel's pier from Marco Polo Airport or Santa Lucia station. Allow roughly 30-45 minutes from the airport and around 20-25 minutes from the station, depending on conditions and arrangements. Share arrival details beforehand, especially with luggage or mobility requirements. Once settled, the short private launch to St Mark's becomes the practical link between days in Venice and evenings on Giudecca.
