Harbor View has welcomed guests since 1891, when its opening gala brought 400 people to the ballroom and lantern-lit veranda. The hotel belonged to a period when Edgartown's identity was moving from whaling port toward summer destination. Its position above the harbor made the sea part of the social life of the building, from the dining room to the long outdoor seating areas. The veranda still gives guests a place to sit with the view rather than reserve it for a particular room category. The hotel's past also includes the cast and crew of Jaws, who stayed in the building during the film's production.

The Historic Building uses mahogany, polished brass, and oak-leaf motifs to reference the island's maritime character, with cobalt-blue walk-in showers in the bathrooms. Views vary between water, village, and resort. The Roxana borders the gardens and pool, with balconies or patios and a brighter palette accented in red. Its outlooks include the Great Lawn, pool, and Edgartown village.

The Captain's Cottages contain 28 individual units, including one- to three-bedroom suites with kitchenettes and living rooms. A one-bedroom layout has a king bed and a queen sofa bed. Standard two-bedroom cottage suites have queen bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a semi-private porch. On the Historic Building's fourth floor, the Presidential Skyhouse has one bedroom, a kitchen, dining room, outdoor deck, and guest half bath. The separate Sky Family Suite has a king bedroom, a bunk room sleeping four children, and one bathroom. The Sky Guest Room has a king bed and dressing room. Each has its own key within a shared entrance, and reserving all three creates a private Skyhouse Wing.

The outdoor saltwater pool is heated and operates seasonally. Private cabanas can be reserved beside it, with the gardens and The Roxana surrounding the pool setting. It is the hotel's swimming facility; the nearby shoreline is reached outside the grounds. A fitness center supports indoor workouts, while seasonal yoga and lawn games bring activity into the outdoor spaces. The pool and garden form a different part of the property from the harbor-facing veranda, giving guests more than one place to settle outside.

Bicycles are available for guest use, and golf-cart shuttles serve town and the beach. These are useful for short outings around Edgartown without taking a car out of the parking area. Onsite parking and electric-car charging are available for guests bringing a vehicle. In the rooms, refrigerators, Nespresso machines, and in-room dining add practical options between restaurant meals, particularly during a longer island stay.

Bettini serves contemporary American cuisine in a dining room whose large windows look toward the coast. Seasonal ingredients guide the cooking, and the restaurant combines breakfast service with a more formal dinner setting and a bar. The atmosphere is polished without requiring a tie or the ceremony of a white-tablecloth room.

Behind The View starts as a cafe, with specialty coffee and takeaway breakfast, then moves into lunch, dinner, cocktails, and plates to share. Its access to the outdoor veranda makes the restaurant part of the hotel's front-facing social spaces. Seasonal Roxy Pool Bar serves drinks and casual food on a brick-and-bluestone patio beside the pool and landscaped garden. Coral-and-white cushions, umbrellas, and firepit seating give it an outdoor summer character. The three venues range from a coffee stop to a seated evening meal without all following the same service pattern.

Within Bettini, the Wine Room gives the collection a visible home behind framed windows. It has separate climate-controlled zones for red and white wines, with storage capacity for more than 3,500 bottles. Reclaimed barnwood lines the ceiling, and handcrafted mahogany forms the racks. The collection is selected by the hotel's owner and sommeliers, drawing on regions around the world. The room's brick-and-wood exterior connects this specialized wine space to the materials and scale of the historic hotel.

The harbor scene also appears behind the front desk in Zack Raley's View from the Veranda. Commissioned for the hotel, the painting stretches more than eight feet across and combines epoxy, paint, and ink in textured layers. It brings a recognizable outdoor scene into the arrival space, with a three-dimensional effect created through the artist's materials.

Lighthouse Beach lies beside Edgartown Lighthouse, a short walk from downtown and near the hotel. It has no dedicated beach parking or public bathrooms. Fuller Street Beach is another nearby public beach, reached at the end of Fuller Street, where parking is limited. These are local beaches rather than a private Harbor View beach club. Walking and cycling are practical ways to reach this part of the shoreline. Farther out at Katama, South Beach faces the Atlantic and often has heavier surf, with lifeguards in season. A harbor walk and an ocean-swimming day are therefore different outings, even within Edgartown.

The Steamship Authority sails from Woods Hole to Martha's Vineyard in about 45 minutes, with year-round service to Vineyard Haven and seasonal service to Oak Bluffs. These ports are separate from Edgartown, so the crossing is followed by an island transfer to the hotel. Bringing a car requires a vehicle reservation; a passenger-only crossing is a different arrangement.

Flying brings guests to Martha's Vineyard Airport, with onward transportation to Edgartown arranged separately. Harbor View can organize car service, taxis, or an island rental car, and its address is 131 North Water Street. A car is useful for wider exploring, but it is not necessary for every outing from the hotel: the village center, restaurants, galleries, and harbor are close by. The hotel can also arrange car service from the Boston area to mainland ferry departures.
