The separation is useful for multi-generational groups, although anyone who wants immediate access to the drawing rooms and restaurant should weigh that privacy against the walk back to the main house.

Restaurant Hywel Jones is the formal dining room and holds one Michelin star. His menus are rooted in modern British cooking, seasonal ingredients and produce sourced from the British Isles, with tasting and shorter multi-course formats. This is the dinner to plan in advance, particularly for a brief stay; children are welcomed from age five.

Walled Garden Restaurant provides the less formal counterpoint beside the spa. It serves breakfast as well as seasonal all-day dining, with an a la carte approach at lunch and dinner, a bar and lounge, and menus for children. The distinction between the two restaurants matters over several nights: guests can reserve a composed Michelin-starred evening without committing every meal to the same pace. Afternoon tea and food-and-drink masterclasses add further variety to a dining programme centred on the two restaurants.

The spa occupies part of the Walled Garden and has enough depth to shape a full morning or afternoon. Its principal swimming facility is a 20-metre indoor pool. A separate hydrotherapy pool extends from indoors to an outdoor section overlooking the arboretum. Eight treatment rooms include a couples' room, while thermal facilities encompass a Japanese Salt room, Amethyst Room, aromatic steam room, sauna, infrared sauna and ice fountain. There is also a post-treatment relaxation room, social lounge and a well-equipped fitness suite.

Families should note the distinction between swimming and the heat experiences. Children under 16 may use the main pool only during designated morning and afternoon periods and must be supervised by an adult; the hydrotherapy and thermal areas are not suitable for them. For adults, the combination of swimming, hydrotherapy, treatments and fitness facilities can sustain a spa-led stay rather than serving as a minor addition to the country house.

The equestrian centre is one of the estate's clearest points of difference. Riding experiences are reserved for hotel residents and cater to beginners, experienced riders, children and families, subject to the programme and horse-and-rider compatibility. Private sessions and guided rides use the parkland itself, so the activity feels connected to the setting rather than confined to an arena. Walking and running trails cross the grounds, and bicycles, croquet, two all-weather floodlit tennis courts and a five-a-side football pitch are part of the permanent leisure setup. Falconry, archery, clay pigeon shooting and duck herding can be arranged, while the Walled Garden, Rose Garden and arboretum reward a slower circuit. This range is particularly useful on a longer stay because it allows different generations to follow separate plans before meeting for dinner.

Lucknam Park works well for families without turning its country-house identity into a children's-resort format. The Hideaway contains imaginative, role-play, baby, quiet and games spaces, and the nearby Activity Pod has table tennis and a pool table. Both require adult supervision. Outside, there is an adventure play area, bicycles with trailers and broad grounds to explore. Interconnecting rooms suit smaller families; the two-, three- and four-bedroom cottages are stronger for longer visits or groups who need a kitchen and shared living space.

Dogs are accepted only in selected rooms and in the cottages, with limits based on the accommodation. They must be at least one year old, kept on a lead around the estate's horses and booked in advance. Access inside the main hotel is limited to reception, and dogs cannot enter Restaurant Hywel Jones or the Walled Garden dining room, though designated bar and terrace seating is available. Owners should therefore choose a category and dining plan with those restrictions in mind.

Two nights allow time for Bath, one important dinner and a spa session, but three nights make better use of the estate. The hotel best suits travellers who value traditional English interiors, organised outdoor pursuits and substantial wellness facilities more than immediate city access or modern minimalist design. Its defining pleasure is the ability to alternate: Georgian Bath one day, then a ride, long swim or garden walk the next, without changing hotels.
