Book Hotel Diplomat Stockholm with VIP Benefits

The building dates from 1911, but its hotel story came later. Architects Georg Hagström and Frithiof Ekman designed a residential palace, with large apartments and a central courtyard. The Malmström family acquired the property in 1917. As the apartments changed use, several foreign embassies moved in, followed by a small guesthouse. The entire building became a hotel in 1966, and its name recalls those diplomatic residents.

Family ownership continues through the fourth and fifth generations. The east wing originally held two vast residences on each floor, with parquet flooring and decorated ceilings. In 1962, the former Romanian embassy became 15 hotel rooms, an early step toward the full hotel. Elements of the state apartments remain part of the interiors. Per Öberg's work draws on those older proportions, preserving the connection between the private homes and the hotel they became.

Interiors by Anna and Pauline Cappelen, working with Per Öberg, bring warm earth tones together with emerald green and Prussian blue. Decorative moldings, chandeliers and Italian wallpapers sit alongside upholstered lounge chairs and custom furniture. Wool rugs soften the rooms, while desks and integrated minibars keep their practical fittings within the overall design. French gilt ceiling fixtures add another decorative layer above the seating and furniture. Color and patterned surfaces carry as much weight here as the architectural details, giving the rooms warmth without concealing the shape of the old house.

Swedish art also runs throughout the hotel. Art advisor and partner Lovisa Malmström has selected works for the collection, which includes Denise Grünstein, Maria Friberg and Helene Schmitz. Photography is part of the display, with work by contemporary Swedish artists appearing alongside the hotel's other art. The family shares this private collection with guests across the building.

The 130 rooms and suites have different outlooks and layouts. Standard Rooms face the courtyard, measure 15 to 18 square meters and have a 160-centimeter DUX bed. Their bathrooms have either a shower or bathtub, and the room includes a work desk and tea and coffee facilities. Superior Balcony Rooms overlook the esplanade; a balcony is not a feature of every category. Courtyard Suites combine a separate living room with a balcony, while Junior Sea View Suites occupy corner positions. Executive Sea View Suites have separate living and dining areas.

The Dagmar Master Sea View Suite looks across Nybroviken and has a 210-centimeter DUX bed. Its bathroom contains a shower, bathtub and steam sauna. Up to three additional rooms can connect to create a larger arrangement. Families can request cribs, and babysitting can be arranged for an additional charge. These requests and connecting configurations need confirmation with the hotel, particularly when several bedrooms are required.

The Restaurant overlooks Nybroviken and serves Nordic cooking with global influences. Seasonal produce shapes the menus, with lunch and dinner available in the same waterfront setting. Breakfast combines a buffet with hot dishes cooked to order. Freshly baked bread, cheeses, cold cuts, fruit and yogurt form the buffet, while the kitchen prepares the hot part of the meal.

Afternoon tea has been part of Hotel Diplomat since the late 1960s. Warm scones, homemade marmalade, finger sandwiches and pastries arrive with a choice of teas, including the house Diplomat Tea Blend. The long-running tea service brings a British dining tradition to this Swedish waterfront room. Brunch is another part of the dining calendar, while the lunch menu combines seasonal dishes with à la carte classics.

Butiken is the hotel's separate food shop and casual dining stop. Breakfast, salads, smoothies and lighter meals sit alongside pastries from the bakery at sister hotel Villa Dagmar. Food is available to take away, and the shelves carry olive oils, pottery and confectionery from Pärlans. Butiken also has a terrace overlooking Nybroviken, bringing this part of the hotel directly into the life of the esplanade.

The Retreat is available for hotel guests to rent privately. Inside are a hammam, sauna, showers and deckchairs, with the space reserved for the booking. Private access is available in one-hour sessions, and the hotel also arranges longer group bookings. Massage and beauty treatments can be arranged separately, along with nail appointments, makeup and styling.

A guest fitness center provides exercise machines and weights, with personal trainers available by appointment. Towels and drinking water are supplied in the gym. There is also an in-house hair salon run by stylist Bo Göran Guldbrand, and treatment appointments at Mia Hjalmarsson's salon. These bookable services range from a training session to hair styling, while private Retreat reservations are handled separately.

The hotel's smaller gathering spaces retain the scale of a city house. The Djurgården room accommodates up to 12 people for a private dinner or meeting. The Gallery can seat up to 42, while Nybroviken can divide into two smaller meeting rooms. The Library provides another setting for private events and receptions, with bookings arranged through the hotel.

The concierge can arrange restaurant reservations, a private driver or a boat tour into the Stockholm archipelago. The hotel's cultural guide includes the Vasa Museum, Nationalmuseum and the Royal Palace, as well as smaller galleries in the surrounding streets.

The hotel is at Strandvägen 7C. Its estimate for a taxi journey from Arlanda Airport is around 35 minutes, depending on traffic. Arlanda Express takes about 20 minutes between the airport and Stockholm Central Station; the journey onward to the hotel is separate. Guest Relations can arrange a chauffeur transfer. For guests arriving by car, paid valet parking uses a supervised, locked garage, with the front desk coordinating the service. There is also a public garage at Birger Jarlsgatan 6 for those making their own parking arrangements.
