Amanwana

Amanwana is Aman's remote tented camp on Moyo Island, off the coast of Sumbawa in eastern Indonesia. Its name means peaceful forest, and the setting earns that name. The camp sits between tropical jungle and the Flores Sea, within the protected landscape of Moyo Satonda National Park. It is one of the most nature-led stays in the Aman collection, built around reefs, forest, waterfalls, diving, boating, and the quiet scale of a small island camp.

This is not a conventional beach resort. Amanwana is full-board, remote, and intentionally small. Aman currently describes the camp as offering 17 guest tents on a beach-fringed bay, with access to whale shark experiences, snorkelling, scuba diving, hidden waterfalls, jungle walks, and non-motorised water sports. That combination gives the hotel its identity: a polished wilderness base rather than a social resort.

Moyo Island Setting

Moyo Island lies east of Bali and north of Sumbawa, within West Nusa Tenggara. The island is known for forest, wildlife, waterfalls, beaches, and marine life. Amanwana sits on the island's coast, with jungle behind and the Flores Sea in front. This gives guests two different landscapes in one stay.

The location is remote enough to shape everything. Guests do not come here for shopping, nightlife, or easy city access. They come for space, water, forest, and a sense of being away. That remoteness is also why the full-board model makes sense. Once guests arrive, the camp becomes the centre of the trip.

Moyo Satonda National Park

The current official Aman site places Amanwana within Moyo Satonda National Park. This is important because it frames the stay as more than a beach holiday. The island and nearby waters are part of a protected natural environment. The resort's activities, from reef visits to jungle treks, should be read through that lens.

The landscape can feel raw and quiet. Forest paths lead toward waterfalls and limestone pools. The coast opens to reefs and clear water. Wildlife, birds, and marine life are part of the experience, though sightings always depend on season and conditions. Amanwana works best for travelers who enjoy nature with comfort, not for those who need constant entertainment.

Seventeen Guest Tents

Amanwana's current accommodation pages list three 58-square-metre tent categories: Ocean Front Tent, Ocean View Tent, and Jungle Tent. The Ocean Front Tent stands directly on the shoreline with uninterrupted views of the Flores Sea. The Ocean View Tent sits back from the shore, with sea glimpses through tropical foliage. The Jungle Tent is wrapped in canopy and gives the strongest forest feel.

The tent count is worth noting because many older descriptions still mention 20 or 15 tents. Aman's current main resort page describes 17 luxury guest tents, so that is the cleanest figure to use now. Each tent has the same broad footprint, with air-conditioning, a canvas interior, hardwood floors, Indonesian art, a sitting area, desk, large bathroom, and a sheltered deck.

Ocean Front Tents

The Ocean Front Tent is the choice for guests who want the clearest sea connection. It sits directly by the shoreline and opens toward the Flores Sea. This category suits travelers who want to wake close to the water, read on the deck, and feel the marine side of Amanwana most strongly.

The Ocean View Tent is slightly more set back but still connected to the bay. It can be a good balance for guests who want privacy and sea atmosphere without being fully exposed on the beach line. Both categories work well for divers, snorkellers, and guests who expect the water to be the main reason for staying.

Jungle Tents

The Jungle Tent gives a different version of Amanwana. It is set within tropical foliage and feels more enclosed by the forest. This can suit guests who prefer shade, privacy, and the sound of the island around them. It also makes the camp feel less like a row of beach rooms and more like a true forest retreat.

The tents are permanent structures, but they keep the language of camp living. Canvas, timber, coral stone, open decks, and the surrounding nature all matter. The best part is the tension between wilderness and comfort: you are in a remote island setting, yet the bed, bathroom, air-conditioning, meals, and service are carefully handled.

Diving & Reefs

Amanwana's marine setting is a major draw. The Flores Sea around Moyo has reefs, clear water, and diving potential for different skill levels. Aman promotes snorkelling, scuba diving, non-motorised watersports, and excursions into surrounding waters. The resort's dive centre and boats make the sea a central part of the stay.

The best days may be simple: breakfast, a boat ride, time on a reef, lunch, a swim, and a quiet evening back in camp. For experienced divers, Amanwana can be a strong Indonesia add-on after Bali or Java. For non-divers, snorkelling and boating still give access to the same marine landscape.

Whale Sharks & Waterfalls

Aman's current site highlights the chance to swim with whale sharks in the Flores Sea. As with all wildlife experiences, conditions and timing matter, but the possibility adds real weight to the camp's adventure profile. It separates Amanwana from a simple beach retreat.

On land, hidden waterfalls and jungle treks give the stay another layer. Moyo's forest is not just background scenery. It is part of the daily program. A good itinerary should mix sea and land: reef time one day, a waterfall trek the next, then perhaps a quieter afternoon in camp. That variety is one reason Amanwana can justify the journey.

Dining In Camp

Because Amanwana is remote, full-board dining is central to the experience. Current stays include daily breakfast, lunch, and dinner, plus in-room refreshments and non-alcoholic beverages. Meals need to be flexible because guests may be diving, trekking, boating, or returning from long outdoor days.

The food works best when it fits the island setting: fresh seafood, Indonesian flavours, grilled dishes, fruit, vegetables, light lunches, and relaxed dinners. The camp model changes expectations. Dining is not about formal urban drama. It is about being well fed in a remote place, with enough variety and freshness to support active days.

Jungle Cove Spa

The spa at Amanwana is often described through its wild setting. Treatments take place close to nature, with the sea and forest shaping the atmosphere. This is not a large polished city spa. It is more intimate and more connected to place.

After diving, trekking, or travel by boat and road, a massage or body treatment makes practical sense. The spa helps balance Amanwana's adventure side. Guests can spend the morning in the water and the afternoon in a slower rhythm, listening to the island and letting the day settle.

Best For Indonesia

Amanwana is best for travelers who want a luxury tented camp in Indonesia with real remoteness, reef access, full-board ease, and a strong nature focus. It suits couples, divers, snorkellers, active families, and Aman loyalists looking for one of the brand's wilder properties. It is less suited to guests who want a polished beach club, heavy nightlife, or easy access to a city.

For a luxury resort on Moyo Island, Amanwana stands out because it stays close to its setting. Book it for 17 guest tents, Flores Sea reefs, jungle treks, waterfalls, whale shark possibilities, full-board camp life, and the rare feeling of being in a protected Indonesian landscape with very little between you and nature.
