El Mangroove sits on Guanacaste's Pacific coast, facing the gulf from Playa Panamá. Its beachfront position gives a stay a different focus from an inland forest lodge. Here, a day might be spent kayaking, taking a boat along the coast or doing very little beside a pool. Nature remains close, but you do not need to set out on a long excursion to spend time outdoors.

Murphy Cramer Design's interiors treat the coastal forest as part of the hotel. Indoor and outdoor spaces flow into one another, giving the property a relaxed, residential character. That approach matters most in the suites, where the living area, hammock or terrace can be as appealing as the bedroom. The effect is less formal than a traditional grand resort, while separate sitting areas make it easier to settle in for several days.

The hotel has an 85-suite core, with larger villas also available. Bark Suites have a king bed and 45 square meters of space, with the hammock positioned in the living area outside the bedroom. Nesto Suites also measure 45 square meters and provide two queen beds, a separate living room and resort views. Neither name should be read as a promise of a direct ocean outlook.

Root Deluxe measures 63 square meters, with a sofa bed alongside the king. Habitat Superior is a 68-square-meter one-bedroom suite with a separate living room, king bed and sofa bed. Its private balcony looks into the resort. These layouts are worth considering when one person wants to read or rest while another uses the sitting area.

On the top floor, Crown Superior has 88 square meters, separate living and dining areas, and one and a half bathrooms. Canopy Grand Suite is larger again at 112 square meters, with a king bedroom, separate living room and private balcony. Ask for the precise outlook when comparing them; the trees are part of the setting, and a higher floor does not automatically mean an uninterrupted sea view.

Mangle Presidential Suite is the choice for a closer connection to the beach. Its 155-square-meter layout has a king bed, sofa bed and living area. A private sun deck, plunge pool and direct beach access distinguish it from the other suites. This is a substantial difference if you expect to spend much of the stay in your own accommodation rather than at the main pools.

The two-bedroom villa has 319 square meters of indoor-outdoor accommodation. One bedroom contains a king bed and the other two queens, each with an en-suite bathroom. A guest half bathroom, separate living and dining areas, and private plunge pool make it a useful arrangement for a family sharing one address. The outlook is toward tropical gardens.

For a larger group, the three-bedroom villa pairs two king bedrooms with a third containing two queens. Its 3,917 square feet include indoor and outdoor areas, with a garden terrace and plunge pool. A washer and dryer are particularly useful after days on the beach or when the hotel forms one stop in a longer Costa Rica trip.

The four-bedroom villa has 4,500 square feet of accommodation, en-suite bathrooms and a fully equipped kitchen. Terraces, a private plunge pool and Jacuzzi extend the shared areas outside. It also has laundry facilities. Choose this category when independent meals and separate bedrooms matter; do not assume the same full kitchen is part of every smaller villa.

Three restaurants give the stay enough variety to avoid planning a drive for every meal. Makoko takes a Latin American approach, using local ingredients and serving breakfast and dinner with views toward the surrounding nature and ocean. Its bar adds cocktails for an evening spent at the hotel.

Matiss is the more casual, open-air choice, with poolside service and an outlook across the gulf. Malú changes the direction of dinner with Mediterranean influences drawn from Greece, Italy, Spain, France and Morocco. The cooking combines produce from land and sea. El Shack Bar provides another option for cocktails and mocktails. The range suits a beach stay where some meals are social occasions and others simply fit between swimming and the next outing.

The family-friendly Activity Zone has four pools, with loungers and cabanas around them. A separate adults-only Relax Zone gives couples and other adults a different place to swim or sit. This distinction is more useful than a single pool count: guests can choose the atmosphere that suits the day. Cabanas can be reserved when a dedicated shaded base is the priority.

At Bearth Spa, treatment rooms and outdoor massage decks sit among the trees and mangroves. The menu includes massages, facials and body wraps. The surroundings encourage a slower appointment rather than a hurried stop between excursions. Beside the spa, the compact fitness center has Matrix treadmills, ellipticals, a weight machine and free weights. Yoga and nature bike rides add ways to exercise outside the gym.

Two hotel tour boats are an important part of El Mangroove's character. Azul Ocean Adventures arranges outings around Papagayo, with options for coastal exploration, fishing and snorkeling. Kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding offer a closer view of the shoreline. Discuss sea conditions and the route with the crew before choosing a trip; wildlife encounters are a possibility, never a promise.

Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport, serving Liberia, is 23 kilometers from the hotel. A transfer can be arranged in advance. This access makes El Mangroove a practical coastal stop before or after inland travel in Costa Rica, with Santa Rosa National Park among the region's excursion options. Allow a separate day for inland exploring, then keep another free for the gulf. The hotel is most rewarding when there is time for both.

Why we love this hotel

Why we love this hotel

El Mangroove sits on the Gulf of Papagayo, only a short hop from Liberia. The beach feels easy fast.

Makoko is the restaurant to remember. It gives Costa Rican ingredients a sharper, more design-led setting.

Matiss and the beach club keep days fluid. Pool, sand, and sunset drinks all stay close.
