My relationship with luxury hotels began almost by accident. During a weekend trip to Prague in my mid-twenties, a friend upgraded me to a suite at the Four Seasons on the Vltava River. I spent two hours on the terrace just watching the Charles Bridge at dusk, and something clicked. A great hotel isn’t just a place to sleep; it’s the frame through which you experience a destination.
Since then I’ve made it my business to understand what separates a genuinely exceptional property from one that simply costs a lot. I’ve stayed in historic palaces converted into five-star retreats, beach resorts where the sand really is as white as the photos promise, and city hotels where the design alone justifies the price of the room.
Growing up in Vienna gave me an early education in grandeur – the Ringstrasse hotels, the coffee house culture, the idea that elegance should feel effortless. Moving to Bregenz introduced a counterpoint: simplicity, natural beauty, and the conviction that the best experiences don’t always announce themselves loudly. I try to bring both perspectives to every piece I write.
For PrivateUpgrades I cover the full spectrum of luxury travel, from boutique hideaways on the Amalfi Coast to mega-resorts in Southeast Asia that somehow manage to feel personal. My articles tend to focus on the details that matter in practice: pillow menus are nice, but I’m more interested in whether the blackout curtains actually block out light, whether the spa uses water that feels different from your home shower, and whether the breakfast is worth skipping the neighbourhood café for.
I’m also a passionate football player and an enthusiastic concert-goer, which means I instinctively gravitate towards hotels with good city connections and rooms that absorb sound properly. Small things. But the small things are usually what you remember.
